For some reason it pretty much doesn't work, sometimes immediately after posting in a thread, it'll mark it unread, and then sometimes if I go into a forum after ages, it doesn't have anything marked as unread... a bug?

Yeah, I get a similar thing. Sometimes threads are marked un-read when I have read them.
Are you using FF Scots? I am and I've been noticing some odd read/unread things. Not just here either.

Might be related to the Private Messages read / unread tangle we've got, I dunno. I think we're still waiting on Jelsoft to give us some kind of support on that one.
Soon here will come the lovely and vivacious Dave to inform and spellbind us with Tales from the Backend.

It's a half-way stage to a Persistent Mark Read system, but unfortunatley sometimes it just doesn't work too well.
It's kinda hard to expain what I think the problem is, but I think it is a combination of cookie timeout, multipage threads and too much reading TTLG (;)).

Do you store the user activities (last viewd items) in the database or do you use cookies for that?
David on 26/7/2004 at 18:33
Session variables for the most part.

David,
I upgraded the (
forums.blackcatgames.com) Black Cat Forums yesterday from vBulletin 3.0.1 to 3.0.3. And just now I noticed that something was wrong. Everytime I posted a reply to a thread, and then went out to Forum Display, my post wasn't marked as read - thus the thread was still marked as unread. If I read the thread again, it was marked as read. This bug is only occuring when you reply to a thread.
I knew I hadn't changed any cookie settings or other things that could have made this problem, so I searched the vBulletin.com forums, and found
(http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/bugs.php?do=view&bugid=3109) this bug report. The report isn't exactly the problem I was having, but it had a relevance to it. I did the changes in newreply.php as Freddie Bingham said would fix the problem, and now it works normal, like it did in 3.0.1.
I just tried to post a new message in a thread here, and when I went to Forum Display, the thread was still marked as unread. I suggest you try the bugfix, cause it seems you haven't applied it.
Just a FYI. :)

Thanks! :)
I shall have a looksie tonight when I get home from work.

Okie dokey, I have applied the fix given in the bug report mOdEtWo linked to.
Let me know if it still occurs. :)

Testing...
[Edit]Yep, I can't replicate that bug anymore. Hopefully this will also fix whatever other problems they've been experiencing with the mark read system.
