Really? I didn't get to play it until I found an original copy at a pawn shop around 3 years ago. Loved it. It's still an amazing game today and coming at it years later as a complete newbie didn't diminish it at all for me.
Same here, I played it after SS2, but to be honest, the controls take a while to get used to each time I replay it.

This is getting off topic, but for the record I wouldn't dream of playing SS1 without the mouse-look mod! That, I think, is the most important hurdle for a modern gamer to get over to play it. @fett, it's worth playing someday. I played it not too long ago too and also thought it held up pretty well despite its age.

I usually think all those early 3D games have aged a lot worse than most titles from that era, and I consider SS1 to be the prime example of that fact. I'll admit it was a smart and creative game. One of those rare examples that helped define a genre, and laid the foundation for everything that's come since. But it was also ugly as sin and cumbersome as hell. I appreciated it for what it was, but I just couldn't get into it.
That isn't to say I think that of all games from then. I think the Tex Murphy games are still as great today as they were back during the mid-90's. I got to play Under A Killing Moon when it was new, but only picked up the other two here fairly recently. Maybe the nostalgia from the first game helped me along, but I didn't have any trouble getting engrossed in Pandora Directive and Overseer.

I thought Ultima Underworld held up pretty well when I went back to play it. I didn't play for all that long, just 4-5 hours, but I was pretty happy with what I played and plan to go back and get into it properly one of these days.
I didn't think SS1 held up as well as UU, although I still enjoyed it.

There's a mouse-look mod for SS1? Sweet! I've been meaning to give it another run for a few years now, but the controls always held me back.

Yep. You can google it, but for the record here's our (

IW? Don't bother. I can't think of many good things to say about it.
You can punch obnoxious children in the face.
Aaaand... that's about it.
