My theory on System Shock 3 that we heard about in 2006. - by ShadowXOR

The problem is that there is now so much legend behind the franchise it would be difficult to produce a game we were all happy with, especially as so many games (bioshock, dead space) get so dumbed down, just so the company can hawk a few more copies.
A good example would be the first 3 Star Wars films (the new ones). Very few thought they were a patch on the old ones. However, even though I love the original 3, there are not without their problems. However we usually get out the rose tinted specs when it comes to things we loved from our past.
End of the day though, the SS games, for all their critical acclaim were pretty poor sellers compared to games like Halo and the GTA franchise. Its a tough game to get into and has a steep learning curve. Those games never sell well unless its a good franchise and even then its hit and miss. Easier to produce Madden 2090 than a decent SS sequal.
What they really need is an updated version of the settings of the original System shock. It allowed you to play a puzzeler or FPS. You could even give yourself a "realistic" time limit or reduce the story elements to a trickle.
Problem with these today is the cost of voice overs and other materials.
