My theory on System Shock 3 that we heard about in 2006. - by ShadowXOR

Perhaps this has already been posted since there are much bigger SS2 fans out there than me (I'm a big fan but not very active in the community).
According to Wikipedia:
Quote:
On January 9, 2006, GameSpot reported that Electronic Arts had renewed its trademark protection on the System Shock name,[61] leading to speculation that System Shock 3 might be under development.[62] PC Gamer UK expanded these rumors further, stating the team behind The Godfather was charged with its creation.[64] As of January 2009, nothing conclusive has been reported regarding the status of the purported project.[69]
Here's my theory:
What was System Shock 3, we've already played and beaten: Dead Space
Quote:
Electronic Arts first announced Dead Space in September 2007. The game was developed at their studio in Redwood Shores, California, whose other titles include The Godfather and The Simpsons Game.
They were the ones that created The Godfather game, Dead Space even runs on the same engine. This is the company: (

The timing matches up too. I've never heard it directly mentioned that this started as System Shock 3, but it had to have. I bought and played Dead Space on a whim and didn't know how it played, but the game blew me away time and time again with amazing sequences and its all around quality. So many times I was reminded of System Shock 2, and some scenes were obviously HEAVILY inspired by it.
Personally, I think Dead Space is a much better, and much more faithful spiritual sequel than Bioshock, which was a disappointment to me (though not nearly as big of a disappointment as Deus Ex: Invisible War). Bioshock was a decent game in its own right but shared pretty much nothing with System Shock 2 besides Ken Levine.
I loved Dead Space and if you're a System Shock 2 fan I strongly recommend you pick it up. I think it's the closest we'll have to System Shock 3 for a long while, and it obviously didn't have a lot of things SS2 did, but it had enough.:thumb:
EDIT: And we do have Dead Space 2 to look forward to which comes out in 2010 or 2011.

Well I did start with:

And I did search, and couldn't find it. I guess I just don't understand how to use it properly on this forum. Never been a fan of vBulletin...
EDIT: My I add I would be 100% comfortable putting System Shock 3 in their hands after Dead Space. Much more comfortable than I would be letting Ken Levine or Warren Spector get anywhere near them. They did great work in the past but their latest works left me with no faith.

Just typing in "Dead Space System Shock" would have been (

But anyway.

On Warren Spector I cannot comment. I dunno about Levine. Bioshock (which I enjoyed, by the way) was pretty much a dumbed-down SS2. Maybe if they had been working on a true sequel, Levine and company would have done some things differently, I don't know.
Honestly, I try not to dwell on it too much, because it's a little depressing. Maybe Dead Space was going to be SS3. Maybe not. From what I've been told (haven't played it yet) it's still a decent game, so at least we can be satisfied with that. :)

Didn't we have sort of confirmation that Arkane was working on Shock 3 for a bit? Then EA changed their mind and cancelled it.

Not that I ever heard of.

"Confimation" is probably going a bit far, but there was some public nod/ wink class stuff.

Really? Interesting. I wonder what ever came of that.

The only thing I played from them was Dark Messiah which had some great ideas but was pretty mediocre. I got it free with a video card... Give it to Visceral.

I guess maybe Levine COULD do a good successor to SS2 but was worried it wouldn't be commercially successful so maybe he's capable just not willing cuz he has to make the big bucks, which is understandable, just don't tease SS2 fans then make some watered down garbage.
