It would be nice to see some LGS people show up on Kickstarter even now....and a Thief 4 (by another name) ?
You mean like, The Dark Mod? I know, I know, we're not former LGS devs but our team has certainly followed their example.

And it's pretty funny (and sad) to see how a team of dedicated modders and amateurs are making a game that trumps some AAA studio deformed spawn.

Yes I do mean like The Dark Mod :D
Which I love and have played a decent amount of. I'll play more soon :)
I have nothing but positive things to say about your efforts.
But you'd have to acknowledge there is always a different feel between "official" efforts and mods, at least there is to me. Even when the "official" efforts are via Kickstarter.

Thief is as much a part of me as my childhood memories. My early adolescence spent in front of a crappy 14 inch ProView monitor, wondering if I could pass by that guard without alerting him, simply defines what I like and call "thief".
I am a fan of other games and titles as well. I am on the opposite of the "haters bandwagon" when it comes to Rome II for example and I defend the new game and own it despite the bad reviews by some.
For Thief however, it was never about a game. Thief is an experience for the senses and the soul of a person. I was walking the empty cobblestone streets of Sozopol with my GF this autumn (around the 5th of September) and somewhere in the back of my mind I'm thinking that these houses and winding paths remind me so much of Thief and that this would make a great FM...
So I am sceptical that I will ever relinquish that consolifying and dumbng down thief, or adding cool new stuff like auto parkour and killcams and headshots is actually good for the Theif expereince. I will definitely play the new game, but I cannot say that I will ever fall in love with it if it doesn't have what makes for me a good Thief game.
Fortunately, Dark Mod and T2 FMs will be with me forever.

I would say that my feelings about Thief 4 are more or less in line with those of TheDorkProject. I have my own personal vision of what the ideal Thief game should be like -- which is quite different from what we're going to see in February -- but, at the same time, I also recognize the reality of the present gaming industry, the need to appeal to a wider market than just us Thief fans, and just how unique, and in many ways, unrepeatable the magic of LGS truly was. As it has been said, LGS was the right collection of people at the right time. No Thief game produced by a different team of developers in the modern climate can ever be on the same level as that which we all remember with such nostalgia. I wish it weren't that way.
While we're on the subject of wishing, I thought it couldn't hurt to indulge our wishful compulsions for a bit. Obviously we have no control over what Thief 4 will be like and our wishes cannot affect reality. But we are a community of people with a shared experience and appreciation of the Thief series that goes back 15 years now, and it can be fun to visualize our ideal Thief game together. On that note, I'd like to start off by listing 10 things I like and 10 things I dislike about the upcoming Thief game:
What I Like
1. The core gameplay is still the same -- stealth is the prime directive, rely on your wits, combat's effectiveness is limited, etc.
2. Great looking graphics overall
3. The City looks dark and gloomy, with tall towers and lamp-lit windows
4. In-game, both Garrett and his new outfit look much better than they did in TDS and TMA (and a face-mask makes sense)
5. Rope arrows are back
6. A collapsible bow makes sense for a master thief in the Thief setting
7. Not too many weapons and items, no sword -- just the core essentials
8. Lockpicking looks great
9. Seeing your body in 1st person is more immersive
10. Shadows around your peripheral vision are a nice way to simulate the effects of wearing a hood
What I Dislike
1. Stephen Russell isn't voicing Garrett, and for a really, really stupid and unnecessary reason
2. The writing so far looks very uninspired, lacks the Thief feel; story is everything
3. No more Dan Thron cutscenes and art style, which is a really key element of what defines the Thief series
4. The music doesn't capture Thief, lacks Eric Brosius' moody ambience
5. Focus mode is gimmicky and unnecessary
6. Garrett should not be able to knock out guards with his fists, he already has a blackjack for that
7. Seeing your hands out in front of you whenever you crouch is stupid
8. Progress-dials on pickpocketing are dumb and break immersion
9. Garrett's cloak is too short -- it should look the way it does in TDP's/TMA's/TDS's cutscenes and box art
10. Water arrows and fire arrows looked better before
What are everyone else's top 10 best and worst things about Thief 4?

In case you haven't heard, TDM 2.0 is now out. Completely free and standalone--no Doom3 required anymore.

My trajectory is almost the exact opposite of the OP.
:)
Didn't hate consoles at all circa 2001-2, was still mostly a console gamer.
Had an xbox first, didn't care for it as a console, exchanged it for a PS2.
My PC gaming being pretty much CS, halflife, Thief and the mods thereof.
Wasn't bothered by whatever plans ms had for halo.
Wasn't aware of it and when I finally became so wasn't impressed with it.
Never cared for Deus Ex.
1 or 2.
(Ironically much preferring Snowblind to either.)
I did similarly hate Thief 3,
not leading up to it (I wasn't even aware of it),
but after playing it
Although despite repeated attempts that has never changed.
I agree that LG was a hybrid one-off time and place.
Kind of like Half-life IMO.
Out of all the things Valve have done since HL, the only thing that came close to HL's synergy was HL2 IMO.
And NOT including the HL2 expansions either.
This nuthief doesn't look good IMO.
In fact I'm wondering if it could really be as bad as it looks.
But through the beauty of an amazingly still active mod community I'm offered what I consider a blessing in the option to totally disregard nuthiefs existence should it become necessary.
I have also mellowed out in many ways over the years.
But in other ways I've also become even more bullheaded in my conviction that I dont have to justify things as more then they really are anymore.
Edit: Also @ the LOTR movies.
I didn't like those either.
Not becasue I'm a purist, I haven't even read the books, I just thought they were boring and periodically silly.
(It was slightly humorous when everybody suddenly noticed the same issues I had with the LOTR movies in the Hobbit after that came out.)
A lot of the prometheus defenders also tried the "purist" defense when attempting to deflect criticism of that.
But even without the original movie or franchise continuity and worldspace errors,
it was just very simply a standard issue bad movie on almost every level that it could be judged on.
It just wasn't any more or less than what it actually was.
