I don't agree with the "world has changed, be happy we have something" attitude.
I agree, it reminds me of an old and not very funny joke
Child - mummy mummy why do I keep walking in circles?
Mother - shut up or I'll nail your other foot to the floor as well
Basically, be happy for what you have no matter how crappy it is and don't complain because it can always be made worse.
Sorry, I want excellence, I will not put my hand in my pocket and reward mediocrity.

No matter the quality of the finished game the greatest good NuThief will do is raising the profile of Thief as a property. Many seasoned gamers are familiar with Thief but will not have made the time to play any of the core titles. A reboot (and the likely fan backlash) could be just the thing to entice people into seeing what all the fuss is about, why the Fans are so incensed.
EMs effort may not revitalise the Thief Brand as a commercial success (though that would be nice) but I think it will certainly bring fresh blood into the Fan Community. I've seen many posters who came to Thief via Deadly Shadows and this in and of itself should give critical fans pause. Better that a lesser instalment keep the Thief series alive in the minds of gamers than the community be denied fresh talent and innovation by Thief sinking without a trace because no new entries are being made.

I agree that we didn't NEED a new Thief game, and I guess the same could've been said about Thief 3.
But I'm still glad we're getting one. There are many things about Thief 4 which bother me greatly, but it doesn't look like some complete train wreck devoid of any possible fun or nostalgia to me, at this point. Perhaps I'll eat those words.
It's a real shame they didn't use Russell for the voice, the mere act of doing that could have bought them a LOT of forbearance from fans (myself included) in other areas. Even if they'd screwed up everything else, the opportunity to hear him reprise the character again would have been worth the price of admission alone.
As huge of a blunder as not using his voice is, it is not enough to make me completely write the game off.
I'm not some completely easy to please pushover, mind you. I've hated the last several movies I've seen and seem to be becoming harder and harder to please by both games and movies. Most games I purchase these days, I never finish. My gf has to put up with me tearing apart every movie we see on the car ride home afterward.
Maybe it's just my passion for Thief, which is manifesting differently than others' passion is for them. Namely, I am not willing to easily let go of the excitement and joy which is natural to feel when there is a new Thief game, after all these years, on the verge of coming out. That is an inherently cool thing to be happening, and it's going to take an awful lot for me to lose all my excitement about it. Granted, they seem to have been working pretty hard to get me to that point... particularly with the voice actor decision... but I'm not there yet.
I don't judge anyone who is at that point, I just feel bad for them. After I play the game I'll be more than happy to come back here and eat my words if it sucks horribly. It may very well.

whatwhat?
Anyhow, I don't consider myself a purist. Bring on the changes. Gimme context sensitive actions. Gimme different voices actors. Throw out the old gameplay and put in something entirely other. Change the setting to modern times if you like.
Anything at all, just as long as it isn't...

I would rather have a company attempt to make a new Thief game, rather than do nothing at all. I know this game won't likely meet the standards of the originals, but it won't take anything away from those games either - "tarnish the legacy" or whatever. Those games will always be great. SR's voice really would have given it more of the feel of stepping into Garrett's shoes, I can't help but think this is going to seem like a completely new character. But I'll still get enjoyment out of this game, and I am looking forward to it. I'm enough of a Thief fan that I'll end up pre-ordering it too.
So no, we didn't need a new Thief game, but I'll embrace this one for now and get whatever I can out of it.
Briareos H on 4/10/2013 at 15:37
What if it wasn't called Thief? Would you still pre-order it?
Renault on 4/10/2013 at 16:09
No, probably not. I think the only other game I've pre-ordered significantly ahead of release date is TDS. With everything else, I usually wait for reviews and forum comments first.

Ah the intellectual stimulation of online debate: Lacking a legitimate
argument against a posited view home in on your targets choice of
terminology and throw out a 'f**k you' for good measure.
Thief is a product, an IP that has been bandied round between Developers
and Publishers for years. I'm not happy about it but I'm a damn sight
happier than someone who curses themselves to disappointment from the
outset by refusing to acknowledge reality.
As for the main topic I've found myself in a similar boat to TheDorkProject;
initially sceptical but increasingly willing to give the game a chance. After all
it's a modern game, published by a AAA publisher, in the current gaming climate.
Believe me there have been far less faithful reboots of beloved titles than Nuthief
looks to be.
Said my piece, now back to the Seclusion Chamber...

Dork project, good catch. I was referring to The Dark Project not Deadly Shadows. My b!
