That's kind of amazing, actually. I didn't think the Masons had that kind of power since the 19th century.
My dad's been a fairly high ranking Mason for a number of years now. I doubt he could secret handshake his way out of a speeding ticket. I'm sure there are some places where you might have a sheriff or town-whatever who's a mason, and would be willing to break a few laws here and there for their members. But nowadays, the whole thing is really nothing more than a glorified gentlemans club with some weird symbolism in tow.
Gunshot, I hope everything turns out for the best for you. I'm with Fett here. What caused you to get all this rolling?

How very awful for you gunsmoke! I admit that like fett & Renz I'm really very curious as to what caused you to go through court battles for 2 yrs. to find evidence that your father's death wasn't suicide? Especially after all these years? Sorry for prying.

Man that's pretty heavy, I can't imagine having somone I know convicted of murder much less my own mother...man what a horrible circumstance. Sorry you had to be the one to uproot all this, damn.

Hey, I'm here too. Deeper south than you. :P
Course I'm not saying there isn't some weird underhanded goings on in some of the lodges. Things like that happen anytime you get a group of important-to-the-community type people in a single setting. Still, I grew up around the Masons, and they've always been pretty benign from what I've seen.

You're right, they are pretty benign. I guess I'm thinking more of small towns where they tend to own elections and city councils, but even then they never carry out dastardly deeds.
Although I heard they were connected to the Holy Grail somehow?

I was under the impression that they were a group based around charitable work in the name God, but nothing terribly specific in terms of what God. My grandfather was somewhat high up, I think. Though he died while I was young, it seems he spent most of his time doing work for hospitals and charities. The Shriners are all masons, right? I have a picture of my grandfather in the Shriners outfit. Of course, things might be a bit different for the organization in Canada.

Speaking of people who died while you were young... How old are you gunsmoke? Did you know your father? Just like a few others here I'm interested to learn what your motivation is after all these years. No offence but it won't bring your father back. Moreover if she's found guilty you'll also have lost your mother. Whatever relationship you had with her will have no chance of getting any better then. I can't get behind what's driving you. And the way you mention your fathers family... I mean they were never related to her. But you are. In what most people will consider the closest relationship you can have to anyone. Makes me wonder if you'll find consolation this way.
Oh and forgive me for being open about this. You know I'm foreign, all this "omg how crappy for you, best wishes" seems rather weird to me in a situation that's as morally ambiguous as could be. No harm meant anyway.

You mean the Ark of the Covenant. The Holy Grail thing is just a smoke screen to sucker the suckers.
And to get back on topic, I can't say I feel bad for him considering he was at least partially responsible for bring the whole issue to light. But I do, once again, wish him the best of luck and hope everything comes out for the best. He's probably well aware that the next couple of years are gonna be pretty painful. For the sake of closure, I'm sure he thinks it's worth it.
