I have overcome every problem that you would run into when trying to get Thief Gold to run on Windows XP except this one! My key bindings will not save. I will set a custom key bind, and start playing and nothing will work but if I go back to default, it all works!
Please help!

I always had this problem all the way back to when I first played the game in 99, so I think it's a problem with the game itself. I think what's happening is that it reloads the defaults every time. I was just playing System Shock 2 last week, and it does something similar.
What I did to fix the problem in Thief Gold: I would save my binds under whatever name ("My binds"), then I would go find the file in explorer, open it up in notepad, copy the contents out and paste them over the contents in the default bindings file.

Set "your" binds and save with a name. Start the game. At the main menu go to "options", open the controls and select "your" binds. Exit the menu and start your game.

theblackman - that's what he's already doing.
Do what lithe says yes, that works - I had to do it too.
I don't think you need copy everything over, just the stuff that changes - and I wouldn't erase what's there unless it clashes, as you could break things. Just change what needs to be changed.
I can't remember the default cfg names but it could be in shock.cfg for ss2 and i can't remember for thief - maybe dark.cfg
I really don't know.
Or it could be a bind file.
anyway, if you can't figure it out, I'll have a proper look to see which it was.

before a long time ago and it might work for you.
Open up one of the preset binds (not the one you get when you first open that window) but in the next option to select a file...and overwrite those bindings with yours, which ever ones you want..then save with your new name for it. Then go back out and from that listing select your new binds file and tell it to "Load" it. Then go to your game menue and start game. You may be doing something similiar but perhaps the extra step might work. It might be worth a try anyway..can't hurt cause that's why they let you select your own bindings if you didn't like theirs, right? ;)
I've always reset my own bindings and never had any problems with my Thief games...I only have TG and T2...didn't want T3. Good Luck and hope something will help you eventually. :)

I do not have problems with any key binding except hold crouch. I set a key for hold crouch and the game changes crouch to that key but I cannot hold the crouch. Given the type of character you play I really need to be able to hold crouch, anyone have any ideas?

I'm sorry but I can't offer any solution because it seems to me that I've always had the same problem with both my Thief games. I've tried setting and using a hold crouch key and they don't work for me either. I just have the toggle crouch key that does work and just use that one...the toggle key will hold but when I go to hit...it will raise Garrett up. However, if you bring weapon up first and then use toggle to crouch, it will hold him down (for one strike only as I recall). Maybe you could try something like that and try to play around with that idea. Perhaps someone has a better solution, good luck with finding a fix otherwise. :)

Thanks The Fire Eater - will give the toggl crouch a try - don't remember seeing it to be honest! I have Thief Gold, so I don;t know if that makes a difference.... Should have mentioned that in my first post - sorry! :)

Simply try to delete "DARK.BND" and after that bind again your controls.Restart game and now it will find your bindings.
