I've just started seriously playing Stygian Abyss. I found the secret passage by the silver tree (I took it, but I don't know what the seed does). I got to a massive door that (I think) leads to the shrine, but it's locked. I tried using the lockpick, but I have zero skill in that, so it always fails. I can't bash it down, and the only key I have is the red key. How do I open the door and get to the first shrine?

Dude, if you want to know what the seed does, just read the sign next to it :p.
As far as the first shrine is concerned, there's a switch on a platform that you can jump to - or target with a projectile or missle spell - in the same room as the shrine door.
B.t.w. How do you know that this door leads to a shrine room when you haven't even been in there yet? I think that you will find that UU is a lot more fun when you spend more time exploring and experimenting with it. It probably took me a good one or two months to complete the first time that I played it as I didn't have the Internet in those days and walkthroughs were hard to come by.

I've got too many games on my plate right now not to use walkthroughs, since I only play occasionally. I haven't found any walkthroughs in the literal sense of Stygian Abyss, so I knew about that from the map. I still don't know how to use the Shrine, but I have heard you're supposed to use it to increase skills, and I'm at level 3 now, so it would seem to be about time.
