That's easy for you to say, doaal! You KNOW where it is. I looked and looked and finally gave up, and that was AFTER I'd played it 4 times! I loved this mission so you never know, I may go back and try again sometime soon. :D

Hey Nightwalker, are you sure you found every single secret in the level? :p There's a LOT (I usually miss a few when I play through the level). After a while I remember them though :)
If you try again good luck!

This message goes out to doaal. Awesome level Looking Glass Studios would be proud. I heard a rumor through some game programmers I know that one of the reasons it went out of business, is that they depened on and made to difficult to play with all those Mechanist contraptions that gameplay was comprimised and was not in keeping with the old English era of the first game what are you thoughts.
There is no Honor Among Thieves!!!!

Hmm I don't think that's what made LGS go out of business, but I definetly prefer Thief 1's playstyle.
That's the effect I was going for in my FM, a creepy-mysterious mansion with many oddities (whispers in certain rooms, bodies hidden in walls etc). I don't think it would have been as creepy if I modeled it more towards Thief 2's playstyle. I can't picture MM as being a mansion with mechanist security <IMG SRC="eww.gif" border="0">

Interesting side note: I always liked the designation of one of the Ranger's levels in D&D called "Courser". Don't know why, and I've never heard it mentioned elsewhere, but thought it was a cool name.

A little hint for secret finding:

** SPOILER WARNING IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE LEVEL **
I played Mystery Man til midnight last night and another hour today and I'm stuck - this is a very hard (although fun) level.
I'm playing on Rogue (medium difficulty) level. I got Dana's Heart (an objective) and I got 3000 gold (an objective). Haven't reached any of the other objectives (and further, I'm all out of arrows and at low health).
OK, here's some details:
I've made it to the 3rd floor and managed to
find Lan's body giving me access to the treasury (Dana's Heart) and the other treasury (some goodies). I also went through everything I could on the third floor and got the crystal shard and found the "whispering exit" from the art gallery leading me to the lab (and climbed a ladder to main lab). I also got the Earth Talisman but no other Talismans (and I don't think I found the place where you use the talismans to open the access to the West Tower).
Questions:
What do I do in the lab?
It's clear that I'm supposed to do something in the dining room (references to a golden plate, Garrett says "what's that sound" as you enter, references to people cleaning their plates then disappearing from the dining room). What am I supposed to do to find a passageway from the dining room (I did find the two treasure chests hidden behind the banners)?
How do I either get access to (Tal-something or other's room, the room Mortimer (sp?) had the "upper floor" key for, the room whose locked door is next to the room with the window opposite the library with a window (both of which overlook the "back gate" area)?
How do I get access beyond where you see a sign "Absolutely no one beyond this point", climb a stairs, and immediately encounter a locked door? (I can't open this door.)
In the main library on the second floor, there's an office. A switch in the office opens a secret door that goes a short distance to a locked door. What do I need to do to get through this door? (I can't open this door.)
THANKS!!!!!!! :)
Pete James - love those Thief/Thief2 FMs! <IMG SRC="thumb.gif" border="0">

Some spoilers...
<BLOCKQUOTE><FONT size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">Spoiler:</font><DIV STYLE="background-color:#000080"><FONT color="#000080">There's not much to do in the lab, it's just there to enhance the story.
As for the dining room, try looking around the mansion for Alexei's plate. Then go back and re-read the book in the kitchen.
Try finding the upper floor key first... examine the room on the eastern upper floors with the fireplace very carefully.
Same thing for the door that says
"Absolutely no one allowed beyond this point"</FONT></DIV></BLOCKQUOTE>

OK, those suggestions worked. Thanks.
Now I'm doing battle with the Master and I can't see any way to destroy him. Books note that Hector has holy water - I haven't found any and I also haven't found any "baptismal fonts" as seen in Thief to convert water arrows into holy water arrows. If I get close to the Master and attack with my sword, that does seem to have an effect, but his attacks are way to fast and I'm dead very quickly. Is there a puzzle here I'm missing? (Also, I tried playing with the Golden Skull from Hector's room - in some FMs the Golden Skulls act as mines to kill undead - but this one doesn't seem to have an effect on the Master.)
Any help appreciated - great mission!
 :)
