You've got the crystal thing figured out. Just look around when you do it and you'll see what happens. If you are playing on Normal difficulty, the small library is of no use to you (that I could find, anyway). It comes into play on Expert only.
To unlock the hidden door in the big library, you need a key you don't have yet. You are on the right track with the fireplace. I did the same thing. Go into it and look up! That will get you on the way to finding other stuff you need.
By Normal, you mean the easiest difficulty level? If so, the crystal is in the room where you read the clue about the crystal meeting the gold. Search it carefully. If you need anymore help, let me know here or by e-mail if you like. I love this mission!

Expert Level
The last talisman I need is the water one. I can see a secret trapdoor in the dining room but I can't find the "gold plate" that (i think) opens it. There is a gold plate at the head of the dining table but it just goes into treasure and can't be "used". Where is Alexis gold plate?

I'm pretty sure that on Expert it is in Alexi's room in a locked chest. You need to have the Master's key to get it. You're on the right track with the dining room.

I need the Talisman of earth...
I can't find the book that goes in the library.
and I don't know what the Crystal Shard is for...

SPOILERS!
The earth Talisman is
in Hector's rooms. Have you found them yet? To get into them you need to find the throne room, which requires the Master's key. If you haven't found it, let me know and I'll give you some clues.
The
book in the library is only available on Expert. If you are playing on Expert, the
book is on the shelves in there. Otherwise, just forget about that clue.
The Crystal Shard is
a key. If you read a book in the room that you can rope arrow up to beside the shed, it said "The Crystal shall sing when it joins the gold". Have you see some gold urns that light up, but you can't pick them up? Put the two together. If you need more help, let me know.

Usually when I get stuck in a FM I just quit if I feel that I've gotten the "feel" for it (I don't play to win). However, I really wan't to get all the way through Mystery Man. I have gone through every room in the place and taken out every guard -- except for the Tower. I can not find the key to the Tower or to the chest in Alexei's room. Please help.

Thanks for the "search" tip. Apparently I really suck, because all of the topics deal with events in the mission way past where I am. What I need is the key to the West Tower. Please help!!!!!
