My character keeps de-selecting magic spells. - by Level8Drummer

I'm a level 20 telvanni mage. When I fight certain people, my guy keeps dropping his hands like I pressed the ready magic key, and de-selecting spells and making the box black. They aren't casting any spells on me to make this happen, or at least nothing is appearing in the bottom right. What's going on?
It seems that if my willpower is 93, and my intelligence in the 80's, that my character would at least remember that he's fighting someone.
It does this whenever I'm messing around with Llether Vari (in Ald-Ruhn). Also in the mage's guild (Ald-Ruhn), the dunmer chick downstairs behind the door.
I have some of my spells hot-keyed, and I have to keep on pressing them over and over again to bring my character's hands up. It's driving me crazy!
What's causing this?
Thanks guys.

No clue. But try setting all the keys to default, it might have something to do with how you have your keys configured.

I checked. Changing the controls to default doesn't matter.
It seems like whenever somebody in the room casts a spell at my guy, he automatically drops his hands and de-selects the spell that was selected.
Has anyone else experienced this? I have the latest patch installed.
It also does it when I fight mistress Therana. I thought that it might have been because my level was low when I fought her before. But I'm level 20. I'm much higher than Llether Vari, and it still happens. Any wizard or spellcaster that I fight, this happens.
Does anybody have any suggestions?

When you lose or get magic items... like scrolls, cast on use items... your spell will deselect. You might be running a mod that scripts you to gain or lose a magic item when your hit with a spell, or maybe you picked up/dropped a magic item and didnt notice.
Level8Drummer on 2/10/2003 at 02:17
Well, I didn't lose or gain any magic items. I'm just standing there and using the plain old fireball spell that I bought from Arille's tradehouse. It even does it with hearth heal. Also, when I'm standing there with a weapon in my hand and readied to strike, and I still have a spell selected (but not readied), the box turns black, and the spell that was selected is de-selected.
And it only does it in combat situations. I can run around in the woods shooting fireballs all day long, but when I start fighting somebody (usually, I've noticed who is a spellcaster, or scroll reader), it happens.
I'm not running any mods that have anything to do with any items. I didn't have any items equipped. just fists!
And I talked to Hannibal today. He's the guy who runs this site:
(
http://home.twmi.rr.com/hanu9/mwind/index.htm)
And he said that he had the same problem. He sent me this e-mail:
Your story reminds me of something that happened to me today.
I have this enchanted ring of "Heal Other" that I was using in a certain Shrine
where Ordinators are fighting Worshippers (I wanted the Worshippers to win so I
could salvage the Ordinators' equipment - and then kill/salvage the Worshippers :o)
Every so often my Spell icon became black, just as you reported, and my
ring was unequipped.
So I'm not the only one...
Keep thinking guys...What could it be? I really appreciate the help. This is driving me crazy!!!

Well I just disabled all of my plugins and started a new game. I chose to be a breton mage with the mage as a birthsign. Pretty generic. I bought spark from Arille. I traveled to Ald-ruhn. I went to Llether Vari (simply because it happens consistently every time with Llether). I readied and fired spark at him. He readied magic. And while he was casting the spell, my hands dropped. I payed the fine. I tried it again, and my hands dropped again. Every time that someone shoots magic at me, my hands drop.
I just have plain old morrowind with the 1.2 patch. I started a new game with no plugins.
This has to be a normal occurance in the game.
Please, anybody...go to Llether Vari in the Skar in Ald-Ruhn. Fire something at him, and see if it doesn't happen to you too.
Can anybody explain this to me?

Tried it and it didn't happen to me. Sorry, no idea what's up with your game. Maybe a mouse or keyboard problem with a button getting stuck when you push it?
Level8Drummer on 2/10/2003 at 19:52
Well I just tested it on my room-mate's computer. It does it on his too... The dude drops his hands, and the spell icon becomes black, and he has to re-select the spell.
So I have 2 accounts of this happening with other people's computers and other peoples games.
This is some wierd stuff.

I've had this problem too, and I'm on the XBox, so no plug-ins (no patch either :cheeky: )
It doesn't happen too often, but I do see it happen... I think I can force it to happen by picking up something that would show up in my Magic list (i.e. an enchanted item with a "cast when used" type spell, a scroll, etc).
I'm not sure how similar the XBox spell selection screen is from the PC version, but I've noticed at times that the list re-aranges itself for some strange reason (I've yet to figure how what causes it or why), this may be related to the problem if the PC works the same.

I may not know what I am talking about since I don't use offensive magic, but might your character's reaction to opposing mages (e.g. Llether Vari) be the result of silence being cast? Surely someone recalls how the character responds when silence is successfully cast. I can only imagine, as it renders you unable to cast spells for its duration, that it might cause your current spell to be un-readied. I suggest this because it might explain why it occurs in some situations (presumably when silence is cast by your opponent) and not in others. Thoughts?
