Lack of dynamic shadows: this is probably the most disappointing to me for a next gen thief, but the first two didn't really have this and they both played out fine. We also have only seen one section of a mission out of an entire single-player campaign so it's probably too early to talk about this.
Actually shadows are said to be so dynamic that you will be able to hide in someone's shadow and follow him around while remaining hidden. Personally I'm sooo going to abuse this trait! :D
As for your 2 cents, I'm totally with you. First games were awesome, but they certainly had some issues (plot holes bigger than Garrett's pockets, for one) and fanaticism with which some of the users here treat them ranges from laughable to downright pathetic.
But hey, I'm just one of the console kids (despite never owning a console, but whatever) with the attention span of gnat, who only recently discovered Thief and almost immediately hop to play most of FMs, so what the
.... do I know? :p

Ability to drop down/attack enemies: This was SORELY missing in the previous games. I always thought it was strange I couldn't do this. Shooting a moss arrow, dropping down, stand behind him perfectly, then club him with the blackjack always felt odd/lacking.
You could drop down and KO a guard in mid air in the original games...you just had to actually perform the actions yourself instead of just pushing a "takedown" button and letting the computer do it for you.

Just like you could in TDS ten years ago.... :erg:

I respect EM's decision to try something new. I mean just imagine, what if Tim Burton recast Adam West for Batman '89 instead of Michael Keaton?
Yes the devs used this analogy as well, but it doesn't make sense because we're talking about a
voice, not a full actor per se. The unique voice is what defines Garrett

What else do you want to do with dynamic shadows?

I have played Thief the Dark Project around 15000 times since January 1999 and it always seems to be the first time.
It's like your favourite song. It doesn't matter if it was recorded 40 years ago.

Activate focus mode to animate Guard's shadows and point Garrett to hidden loot. But
wait! All is not yet revealed, for one special guard's shadow will lead Garrett to his undoing ...
Thief 4: actual deadly shadows this time 'round.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. However...if that's how you really feel, you're not going to get a lot of support or backing here. Tbh, I pretty much stopped reading your post at this point.
I liked what the OP said.
It is the closed-mindedness of "you're not going to get a lot of support or backing here" and "I pretty much stopped reading your post at this point." that runs contrary to everything that Thief is about. Imagine if LGS responded to, "Hey let's make a game about a Thief called Garrett who likes........." and then someone else stepped in and said, "Stop! Don't continue. You will get no support with an idea like that for a video game."
LGS, Ion Storm, and most recently EM, is and has been about taking risks. Taking Chances. EM must be applauded for owning it and not making a "cover song" a "Thief 2.5"
TDS, in and of itself ,was a decent game. I played it half a dozen times. Compared to the first 2, it failed on many levels.
Open your mind, people. Thank the builder that we're getting another professionally made game with a budget in the tens of millions.

I think many people here are looking back at those old games with rose-tinted glasses. They are not masterpieces by any means
That's a matter of opinion. I think Thief Gold is the greatest game ever made. I had only played classic shooters until about 10 years ago, then I found Thief and it changed my life. I guess it also depends what type of games you've played before, and exactly when you discovered Thief. I've played other games with better tech and graphics since, but so far nothing has topped the Thief games (Skyrim comes closest). When I'm playing them I don't care about the graphics limitations (in fact I never did to be honest, everything else makes up for whatever shortcomings they have). And I have to say the old graphics, especially in T1, have a certain grittiness I absolutely love.

I feel you either left out, or do not appreciate, the subtleties of Thief as made by Looking Glass. In that way, you look favorably on the new game for superficial reasons and call them similarities. Its like telling a Border Collie owner that your Chihuahua is the same: fur, tongue hanging out, it even barks!
