Having looked at quest guides and played the game for a while, I now see that there are at least two more characters I'll need to play in order to be able to do all the factions and misc. quests.
1. (my present, and the original, character). Female Dunmer. Hlaalu. Custom class (all purpose warrior/mage with security in the minor skills, but uses brute force in most battles). Joined everything except thieves and Morag Tong. Cannot become a vampire- too late into the main quest.
2. (Character created, but not played beyond Seyda Neen). Male (so can do male-specific quests). Khajit (wanted a beast race). Will join house Redoran, thieves' guild and the Morag Tong, and some other guilds, but not all of them; I think the Imperial legion and fighters' guild would be out of character, others I'll have to think about. Custom class, thief/assassin type.
3. (yet to be created). Female who will join Telvanni and thus be able to do Mistress Drathana's quests. Will become a vampire and do their quests. Will be a mage (custom, probably). Will join some suitable factions; MT, Mages, anything anti-imperial. Will be fairly immoral and unpleasant (if I can force myself to be like that; I find it hard to be truly horrible. Even to pixels. Is this a sign of sanity or the opposite?)

When I first made and kept a character, I tried to have one who will be able to do most things. I now realize that this is impossible, unless, presumably, you cheat.
Oh dear, then there are the plugins...
Ah well, goodbye real world...

Yes, I do recall reading something to that effect. But I think I'll wait until my Telvanni character - I want her to have new things to do other than Telvanni and Mistress Drathana's quests.
Of course, all this may have to be revised when I get Tribunal.
