Get a sanza player (the Clip is cheap as hell (£30ish?)

Sansa 4gig Clip - best MP3 player I've ever owned
Agreeing with this, just got an 8gb Sansa Clip for £42. It sounds great, doesn't jog and is unfeasibly tiny. Using my Sennheiser CX300-II headphones, which I've had for years and are awwwwwesome.

Sony earbuds are reliable, but they physically start to fall apart after a year of frequent usage and the wire is sensitive to bending. The cost about 10USD, so it's a fair deal.

I've been using a Sansa e200 for a year and it's great. The interface leaves a little to be desired and the scrollwheel is way too sensitive, but it's got a good battery life and in any case it's many steps up from the CD players I'd been using.

What the fuck are you people talking about? Earbuds? Shit. Any will give you sound. The difference is negligible. What the hell? You can still hear after so many rock concerts? Thank your lucky stars.

Another vote of confidence here for the Sennheiser CX300s, they're very good if you want in-ear models.

I'll enjoy it while I can. :p

Sometimes Tocky comes off as a poor man's tBm. Go back to your A-Ha, dude.

Another vote for the Sansa clip. Small, user-friendly, good battery life, and dependable.
Tocky's right about earbuds though. They all sound like shit and comparing them to one another is about as productive as picking hairs off your ass. They're only good for convenience, but you're never going to get the bandwidth from them that you will from a good pair of over-the-ears style Shures. But like the man said, they're made for monitoring, not jogging.

In-ear headphones (especially the Sennheiser/Creatives) do not sound like shit. So long as you use the right sized rubber adaptor for your ears, you can get surprisingly balanced sound quality.
