Tom Waits albums '73 to '78, and also Franks Wild Years from '87. For something more modern I might go with The xx's album although it might only be because Stitch put it in my head(well, all our heads) that it's a night album. Also the "Give Up" album by The Postal Service, but only between 4 and 6 in the morning, and only in the city, never the countyside.
Glad you made this thread actually. I've had a nighttime music playlist on Spotify for a long time with no real idea what to fill it with.

Heh, the XX
is a through-and-through night album. It absolutely is.
Night is when I play anything by Sigur Ros. Like, oh, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXCyITCKBJc&feature=related) Dauðalagið (however that's pronounced. Otherwise known as the track used for Dead Space's launch trailer). I tend to sing along when I'm feeling silly -- "you xylooo, xylyloooo, you say hellloooooo?" Breaks the mood like hell though. Or there's their (slightly) happier stuff, like (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA-kY2AI_Kk) Glósóli.
I tend to play Radiohead pretty much late evening-night, and King Crimson's Red, and anything ambient or droning like Stars of the Lid.
But more often than not, it's moderately balladic stuff. Rock or otherwise. Like Modest Mouse - (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqHCpsxzg2M) Talking Shit, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eQNxgc9tDc) Missed the Boat, fun.'s (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT-5NY83OYI) The Gambler, or, hell -- Rush's (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi6CnjuexC0&feature=related) Bravado.
Otherwise, it's orchestral and classical shit. Everything stark and fragile and beautiful from video game OSTs to friggin'
Für Elise.

Für Elise.
That's something i could listen to for ages. Also have been hooked on Watchemen soundtrack lately. Usually though it's world folk (celtic) and dark ambient by night and whatever radio station colleagues' pick by day.

More seriously:
Zahmia Lehmanni, by SPK.
If I die I die, by the Virgin Prunes.
Worlds in a small room, by Jansen and Barbieri.
Nebka, by Benjamin Lew.

I can't be the only person whose listening habits change drastically after dark.
Nope!

While during the day I'll blast something heavy like Isis or Darkthrone, at night I reach for something else entirely. In fact, I would argue that my nighttime music is more diverse- I'll play anything from jazz to dark ambient to old 70s pop. I particularly like listening to the Manhunt soundtrack, (

I'm the opposite. I like to listen to something smooth, but lively. At night, I prefer something heavier. Not necessarily heavy metal, but something that keeps me going until my eyes want to close.
