Strange, but I have Vista, which comes with DX10, and I can run Thief without a problem with DDFix. And it looks better than ever.
My T3 is playing great and yes it is looking better than ever. That was clear as soon as the game started. I'm useing the same geforce 8600GT, from my old computor, but T3, looks different. I guess, it is Vista, that makes it look different? I did not know why, it looked different. Not alot different, somethings are clear, maybe the graphics are better?...

Thief 3 and Thief 2 are different beasts alltogether. Thief 3 uses Unreal 2.0 engine and Thief 2 uses its own engine called Dark Engine. If you can run Thief 3 in your computer, it doesn't mean that you can run Thief 2 in it at all.

That "windows\system32\dllcache" points to folder, not a file.
And Vista doesn't have such folder at all. You only need to put imagecfg.exe to your game folder and run it from there. Just putting it to your game folder doesn't help at all in your problem, you need to run it under command prompt.
Click on Start-button and then click on Run. In opening window write
cmd. Now you should have command prompt open. Write this in command prompt window :
cd "fullpathtothief2gamefolder". Replace
fullpathtothief2gamefolder with full proper path to your Thief 2 folder. Remember to include quotation marks.
Now you only need to type these commands in command prompt window:
Code:
imagecfg -u thief2.exe
imagecfg -u thief2.icd
imagecfg -a 0x1 thief2.exe
imagecfg -a 0x1 thief2.icd
I folowed ur instructions and everything went like it was suppose too. Each time i typed in one of the commands, it did it and waited for another command, till i had put them all in. i tried to play the game and it still locks up as soon as it starts. this is what i typed.
cd "c:\games\thief2" i hit enter and it gave me this
c:\games\thief2>I typed the first of the 4 lines u gave me here.
it said it changed the processor. So, i believe it worked. i did the same with the other 3 lines and everything seem to work perfect. Game still locks up as soon as it trys to start.
Now, if we assume i did it right. Could the problem be my video drivers. I'm running the geforce 8600 GT. I have the 163.75 forceware drivers. These are the 64bit drivers. i was able to use the 32bit version of this driver on my old computor.

The problem is that you have way too new video card and drivers for it. Dark Engine in System Shock 2, Thief 2 and Thief 1 doesn't like it. You need to apply ddfix for your Thief 2. Check thread called "DDFix and Enhanced Resolution Patch (including widescreen support)" in this forum for more info.
Have you applied official game patch for your Thief 2? You need to do this before you can apply ddfix into it.

I have thief2, version 1.18. I did not think there was a patch for this version. Second, i was using this video card and these drivers on my old computor. Like i said above, they were the 32 bit drivers on my old computor. Will installing the 32 bit drivers help....
Also, i am using a 42" LCD HDTV for a monitor. I will checkout the wide screen fix. It's beginning to sound like i'm not going to be playing T2 on this computor.
Great News
I am playing T2. I must have got the ddfix right. And i got the widescreen patch and it works. But what got me going, was the K-Lite codec Pack, Vista does not come with the right one. Installed and the game started and looks better than every. You have to go down the list and click some of the codec, because they are not installed by default. This is important, if u do not select, them manually, they will not install. If u do not want to install, everything in the K-Lite pack. I understand now, u can uncheck everything, but the Intel Indeo 5 codec, this is the one u need for Vista. Again, to every one here, Thanks for the help. Mark

42"--holy crap! That'd be sweet to play Thief on, if one could get the bloody thing working.
With that being said; at this point, wouldn't it be easier to just buy an old computer (they cost, what, a $100 bucks at the most) for legacy game play?
