No. But then, the namby-pamby idiotic legislation in UKland isn't designed to stop crime. The namby-pamby idiotic legislation is designed to make policing and judiciary easier. Which they do. Phew. Noticing that all the namby-pamby idiotic laws in the US don't stop crime either. Who'd have thunk? BAN CRIME NOW!
No, the namby pamby idiotic legislation is designed to make idiot sheeple think that the world (or their little corner of it) is a safer place to live, and to improve the legislators' (or whatever you call them over there) chances of getting reelected by said idiot sheeple.
In the UK it is illegal to carry:
A non-folding knife
A folding knife that locks
A folding non-locking knife with a blade longer than 3"
Flick knives (switchblades to us Yanks) are definitely illegal.
Yet these laws didn't stop the mugger from
Aquiring one (probably came from Italy or France)
or carrying one
or threatening somebody's life with one.
If the flick knife wasn't available to the mugger, I'm certain he would have used a different knife...and if no knife was available, many things could be substitues. That's where the real idiocy is. Basically, it's illegal to defend yourself in the UK, because anything you could use to defend yourself is illegal. Even pepper spray (mace) is illegal. So law-abiding citizens are left helpless victems, and criminals can do almost anything they want with impunity. And god forbid someone breaks into your house, if you whomp him on the head with a
baseball cricket bat,
you go to jail.
It amazes me how willing some people are to give up their rights for the illusion of safety.
I have to admit though, that there is some irony in the fact that most stabbings are in domestic confrontations, and that the highest percentage of type of knife used is a kitchen knife.

You can carry an unloaded air pistol though, as long as you're not trespassing!
That will scare off the assailant!
Knife-proof armour is legal though, maybe we should all start wearing that?
[edit]Also, how does carrying a knife make you safer? All it does it make the assailent kill you for your money, rather than just threaten.[/edit]

Don't try to impose your own experiences of weapon and gun culture onto a country you clearly have fuck-all idea about. Try also to understand that most people in the UK don't regard carrying lethal weapons as some sort of right, and that someone who admits to keeping weapons is likely to be seen at best as a loser and an object of ridicule, and at worst a paranoiac.
