So I was on the train at the Blackwell station on the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) at about 730pm tonight after seeing my brother off at London City Airport.
I was alone, and nobody else got off the train with me - there was one guy on the platform, and as I walked past him I saw him get up off his seat and follow me. So obviously I just kept walking pretending nothing was wrong; then he shouted at me if I was fuckingg looking" at him. I didnt reply but walked a bit faster down the stairs, I heard him walking quickly to catch up and again he shouted after me.
Then I heard the snap of a flickknife; and knew that this wasnt a man worried about how people view him in the world. So there I was, alone in the East of London with a dude with a knife and a wallet full of cash and credit cards.
So I did the natural thing - I legged it as fast as I could, and my GOD can I run fast. But thats not what shook me up; its the fact that this dude chased me for a fair distance before giving up and yelling obscenties at me.
Yeah, welcome to London indeed. Course, I fully expected something like this to happen; but Ive had knifes pulled on me before, just never with the determination to be chased over it. Also the guy didnt come across as particularly effective at mugging - I mean...a good mugger will wait till he (or she) is close enough to their victim before revealing their implement of torture. This guy showed his hand too soon and it failed him.
Anyway, I called the police when I got home who of course were extremely helpful and informed me that if they caught the guy then he'd be excuted at daybreak.
So in conclusion: beware.
note: i could have been a man and fought this chap; but when faced with a knife the only thing you can do is run.
(cue "thats not a knife, THIS is a knife! thats not a knife, thats a spoon!" moments).

Never a good idea. Glad to hear you're okay. Was there any CCTV around at all? And did you get enough of a look at the guy to ID him?
Touch wood I've never been mugged, but I think that's cos the natives up here are too busy hurling stones at ambulances or something. Oh those wacky Scousers.

Got enough milk, thanks. Don't need more.

Sounds like he was probably just interested in hurting you, considering he started on you without any provocation and chased you for so long. Well done for getting the fuck out of there!

yeah thanks.
i'm more running on the adrenaline right now - had a stiff whiskey when i got back to my flat and now i'm phoning people and telling them of my "victory" against the "evil" muggers of london.
thing is, i wasnt scared, more worried about whether or not i'd be seen by anyone. it was more freaky that there was absolutely noone around except me and this guy who was obviously intent on hurting me and not on my money since he didnt ask me for any cash etc.

It would've been a better story if you'd disarmed him and broken his neck or stabbed him with his own knife. I've never heard of many muggings around here, but then again, I don't go out much. Besides, I look too dangerous myself to be screwed around with by the population's lesser levels.

Do all of London's CCTV cameras keep the streets safer? Even if they didn't, it would still be satisfying if camera footage was used to successfully nab and lock up an attacker.
