They closed it completely for four years starting in 2002 and completely renovated the interior (to the tune of 93 million dollars), and you needed reservations to visit when they reopened. Though, according to the site you don't need reservations any more. I probably should have checked that. I should probably go up there some time.

I've only been in LA twice and both times I never went further than LAX. The only advice I have for you is watch out for the Scientologists while you're there.

There's an underground section with the Planetarium and other museum stuff. And apparently a "new observing instrument," but Griffith stopped being a functional stellar observatory god knows how long ago due to the light pollution, so I'm not sure what the instrument is for.
