Damn.. this makes living in Sioux Falls cheap.. you get get apt for $300/month. Probably not as nice, but still, I don't care. And I feel like I need to hurry the fuck up and move out, and I'm only 19. How could you stand to live with your parents until your 26?

In southern california $20 will buy you Five big bags of potato chips.
Ok, I'm exaggerating...it'll buy 6 bags..maybe.
point is folks, grocery prices are alot different depending on where you live. You can get by alot cheaper
on groceries on the east coast U.S. than west coast, or at least southern california.
I don't think this is necessarily true, as long as you know how to shop. I've lived on $25 a week in southern california before, and I spend about 40-50 a week now. I've spent enough time on the east coast to have to shop in supermarkets there, and I found it all to be pretty comparable. Maybe it's more noticeable in the middle of the big urban areas though.
Housing costs are a different fucking matter entirely.
Anyways the point is that Sypha won't starve if he's got $600 a month after rent for food and bills and stuff.

Serious Advice:
1) If you are able to move into a situation where you are semi-independent this better (like training wheels). For young students going to college/university try to get out of home and into this situation at some young adult stage. E.g. having a cleaner already included in the rent payments, semi/fully furnished terrace/unit/room, utility bills included in rent payments, etc. Ask the agent for deals like this if possible.
2) Paying bills. Internet banking allows you to pay bills - in Australia we have something called BPAY (I'm not sure what your equivalent is called). All you have to do is get the bill letter and go into your internet banking, select bill payment, then type in the BPAY number and any other questions it asks you.
3) Good roommates are good. :P If you have ppl to talk to this is a plus. Being able to ask advice/ get and give favours helps in running a household. It also teaches you to be more selfless which is useful for marriage later (if you are going into that situation later).

I spend about $100 a week on groceries for my wife and I.
You're right about housing costs, A 1 bedroom apartment averages 850 to 900 a month here and that isn't anything fancy. The really nice apartments can go for 1000 to $2500. a month here, and the median price for a home if your buying..get ready... $500,000. and up

I spend around $200AU a week on groceries. Do I win a prize?
I think we managed to top that by a fair amount recently, but it's mostly due to the purchase of far too much nice wine, and to a lesser extent organic vegetables. Sounds like we're on the same grocery page...
Also, kudos to noid.

Well, Sypha might but it's not going to be for want of affordable groceries.
