How big is the map?
Jonesy on 22/2/2006 at 20:54
Pretty big, actually, it would take you 2 or 3 days of travelling on horse to reach from one end to the other.

That's ingame days, of course. A few minutes realtime.

At least a half hour, I think. Unless you have a large group of guys following around with you, you're going to get in at least a couple of battles on the way across.

If you travel light and fast, you can also outrun many would-be attackers, though, which would shorten your travel time quite a bit.

Tried it, sometimes you get trapped between a hammer and a hard place, which is why I always travel with an additional 50 foot or so with me. They take the bolts, I kill the crossbowmen.

If you're solo you only need to kill one of the enemy then you can leave the battle and run away. Make sure you have a fast horse when you try this.

If escape is tantamount, you might consider dumping inventory. Also, keeping additional horses in your inventory decreases the travel penalty caused by hauling loads of goods. Especially handy if you're going the merchant route.
Here's a good trick, too; dismounted horses provide handy little barricades. They can keep you safe from arrows until they die, and enemy horsemen who try to charge you will run into the horse and stop, leaving them open for a headshot with a ranged weapon.
