From (
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2008/sep/17/douglasadams) The Guardian:
Quote:
Douglas Adams's increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy is to be extended to six titles, after Adams's widow Jane Belson sanctioned a project which will see children's author Eoin Colfer taking up the story.
And Another Thing... by Colfer, whose involvement with the project was personally requested by Belson, will be published next October by Penguin. No information has yet emerged about the plot of the novel but Hitchhiker fans will be hoping for a resurrection of much-loved characters Arthur Dent, Trillian and Ford Prefect, who were all apparently blown to smithereens at the end of the fifth novel, Mostly Harmless.
[nerd rage]ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
No disrespect to Colfer - I love his Artemis Fowl series. BUT ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Adam's body has even gotten chilly yet and his wife decides to rape the damn corpse. It's usually said as a joke but is totally appropriate in this situation: Is nothing sacred?[/nerd rage]
In retrospect, I see the HHG for what it was, but when I first read it, it overshadowed everything I'd ever read at the age of 14, and it has held a place of high honor on my bookshelves ever since.
WHAT THE FUCK
I WILL KILL SOMEONE
*And for all of you who are too smart and cool to admit that HHG is the shit, you can fuck right the hell off and go post in the snoozefest political thread. We don't want your kind here.

Fowl read like poor man's Harry Potter.
And Harry Potter already read like poor's man... something.

Adams wanted to stop after the fourth book but the fans wouldn't let him. So he wrote a fifth book where he killed the major characters to make things final. Enough said.

Pretty sad.
I think I was 15 or 16 when I heard the Dutch translation on radio, only 1-2 years after the first British radio sessions. It was different from anything I had heard before. There has been very little humour that had such an impact on me. Monthy Python, some dutch comedians, and that's it. All other "humour" is pale compared to this level.
Having someone else write more books, that's pretty sad. I would assume the widow would have made enough money off of it.

I'd imagine that there are enough fans who'd be willing to buy the sequels, though, so they're just as much to blame.
I think I'd accept, say, a collection of short stories by other authors set in the Hitchhikers universe - some sort of tribute book. That might be interesting and fun. Apart from that, though, I liked the finality of the fifth book (even if it's my least favourite of the books). I already thought that the way the fifth radio series ended cheapened things a tad.

Worse news than this have been reported, but not by reliable sources. :p

I thought the fourth book ended rather poorly, so I'm glad Adams came back and finished the series off proper, with a better book too, but I can't say I care about this news. Try as he might his author's voice is going to be different than Adam's. The idea of another book is wholly unnecessary as well.

Haven't read the HHG books for years, but I do remember thinking at the time that the first two-three books were a damn good read and then the writing got progressively worse; don't think I could be bothered to finish the last one due to my almost complete apathy for the events unfolding in it.
Have no desire to see any more HHG, but the first couple of books are still well worth reading.
