We're keen on the whole Blade Runner look and conspiracy-theory-laced plot, but we just can't take this game too seriously when it's filled with some of the silliest artificial intelligence we've seen all year.

It's actually Most Pretentious of 2003 (2004 would be something of meaningless statement on January 2nd) I do agree that DXIW AI is pretty poor, but I don't see how "bad AI" equates to "pretentious"
And it was also nominated for "Best Story" and "Best Technical Achievement" (physics and lighting) It didn't win any of the 3.
My personal opinion is that the most depressing thing (even beyond comparing it to the original) about DXIW is that it is in fact one of the best PC games released in 2003. Not the best (something like Silent Storm blows it out of the water, IMO) but one of the better ones. It's been a pretty bad year for PC releases. Hopefully 2004 will be better.

I've actually played some really excellent games this year, including KOTOR, which is classic material imo. H&D2 + Tron 2 were also great games as well.

I think what they're trying to say is: get the basics of gaming right before you go trying to add the cool factor in.

Oh, I agree. I think a lot of DXIW's difficulties come from concentrating too much on advanced features or the "core experience" - the story and choice gameplay, and neglecting (or being forced to compromise on, depending on who you believe) other aspects such as AI and stability. My point was mainly that, looking at the other games in that category, "pretentious" refers more to storyline and general "feel" rather than technology.
Twisty - That's only my opinion. No doubt some people found 2003 an excellent year. I played KOTOR on the XBox, so I didn't really count it as PC, and although it's an excellent game, it isn't really my preferred style of game. I was mostly talking about games like Unreal 2, Max Payne 2, and Lionheart which sounded promising (often through innaccurate previews or stripping of features prior to release) and turned out disappointing. I suppose Max Payne 2 is pretty good, actually, but I was disappointed because of the way they went with the story and the gameplay.

DX2 gets my vote as well, unfortunately. They pushed out a lotta false advertising early on, and toted the 'emergent gameplay' and 'new controversial design' like it was some smashing old thing they were going to perfect and deliver to us so we'd have an absolute ball doing FUN things. I was hoping it'd be a killer experience too.
Well. That didnt work out.
