Like that makes any difference to anything, at all.
Really.
Oh oh my stupid space movie from 1999 isn't as good as my stupid space movie from 1977
You're from Canada and couldn't possibly begin to understand what this has to do with anything. Really.

They died?
Yes.
I was never much of a fan of The X-Files (too many NON-myth episodes for my tastes) but I still liked The Lone Gunmen. I think I will be Frohike in 40 years.
They died in a Kobyashi Maru, stopping a deadly toxin from killing a cubic fuckload of people. The episode was called "Jump the Shark". I appreciated that.

You're EDGY because you don't like Star Wars.
Even better - you should hate Star Wars in general, but profess undying love for The Phantom Menace. That'll keep us guessing.
That crazy Aja, what next?

I never said I hated it. I just think it's ridiculous how everyone comes down on the new films when they're really no dumber than the old ones.

Depends what you mean by "dumb".
Dumb now was mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, paradigm-shifting back then.
When you were born, the video stores, theaters, and television networks were full of crap imitators and a handful of pretty decent fare. You became aware of it all when it was no longer new and fresh and invigorating.

it's called context, bitches

I never actually got around to seeing the first X-files film but apparently it wasn't half bad. Would it still be worth a look now though?

They are worse films. The acting is consistently worse, more wooden, less entertaining to watch - there was little amazing acting in the original trilogy, but it lacked the leaden flatness of the main characters of Eps 1-3. The directing is worse - in the original trilogy, Lucas did the right thing by handing over the directing baton to others. The guy simply doesn't know how to work with actors. The writing is much, much worse - it takes itself seriously, it over-complicates what should be a fun, pulpy matinee serial. (Ep1 fares worst in that respect.) Technically, the special effects might be better, but they're used less effectively because of bad pacing - you need an ebb and flow of spectacle, you need moments of rest. Often, the visuals of Eps 1-3 are overburdened, and because of the constant onslaught of spectacle you get numbed.
Return of the Jedi already moved quite a bit towards the problems of the prequel trilogy, but it did better because Lucas left some of the decision-making to others. In the prequels, every single thing went through him, and it shows. He's good at certain things, but he's bad at everything to do with characterisation and writing.

Now that you mentioned it, I think I'll watch it again tonight. The impression I had when I first watched it a few years ago was that the producers actually made a meticulous effort to cater to existing fans of the series, as well as viewers of the movie as a standalone feature film. I personally believe it wouldn't feel too dated, even now.
