A friend of mine sent me this link: (
http://www.maniacworld.com/Phone-Salesman-Amazes-Crowd.html) and though I stopped watching American Idol during its first season (Simon's ego was just too much for me), I'd love to see this man win.
His performance actually brought tears to my eyes.

He was actually on Britain's Got Talent, not American Idol, and he did in fact win.
I only know this because he sang the national anthem at the Dolphins/Giants football game at Wembley that I went to a couple of weeks ago.

I don't normally watch those shows. That was pretty impressive, though.

I saw that when it first came out, when Paul was actually going through it on Britians Got Talent. People were posting the results as soon as they would come out. It was all over YouTube, people were cheering him on, from all over the globe.
Speculation whether he was actually schooled, or not. He was not a professional at that time, he is becoming one now. Simon told him do not change who he is, I hope he doesn't. He just came out with a CD. It was rather cool to watch this, see him progress, and make it. A case of the ugly duckling turning into a swan, he made it. The stuff dreams are made of.
Something about him, I like him, he's a humble man with a big voice. Opera is not easy to do, some people put him down, you'll get that anywhere, no surprise. I'd like to see them get up there and sing like that. He had the guts and courage to go after his dream. He's not perfect, but, listening to him sing, Nessun Dorma, I get goose bumps. He is no pavarotti, life must continue, and new singers will be found, the world has discovered Paul Potts.

Given that he's obviously pretty nervous I think he did good.

That's how much I pay attention to those talent shows as a rule. I saw Simon & automatically assumed it was American Idol.
In any event, I think that with some formal training Mr. Potts could indeed become the world's next Pavarotti, a man whose voice could give me goosebumps. One of my biggest disappointments happened years ago when my dad & I went to see Pavarotti perform in Chicago, only to get there & find out he'd cancelled his Chi-Town appearances. I guess he was notorious for spur of the moment cancellations.
I'm glad Paul Potts won and sincerely wish him well in his new-found career.

Sadly he seems to have gone the Russell Watson path to middle of the road populist tenor, judging by the mix of opera/musical favourites and pop songs on his debut album.
If that's what he wants, then fair enough, but I can't help thinking he should and maybe wants to be going after proper roles in a proper opera and build some genuine gravitas instead of the fast route to fame and fortune which these TV shows provide.
However, of course, there are doubtless other similarly remarkable singers who simply haven't had the TV coverage on such a show, and probably don't have such a charming ordinary-bloke-has-talent tabloid storyline behind them.

nice, a little overly dramatic on some of the camera angles but damn, that guy can sing.

:o To my eternal shame, I'm currently listening to the X Factor - shocking! :laff:
I don't normally watch this stuff - most TV is crap - and when I first watched I almost cried tears of pain because I do sometimes listen to opera. BUT, putting aside preconceived notions of what opera singers should sound like and bearing in mind the quality of youtube which can't be that great, I think he did pretty well and I also think he was enormously brave to take on Nessun Dorma. I'm glad he won because I always like it when the unexpected happens.

Its very hard to tell from 1 view of youtube, but, and I'm probably in a minority of one here, I don't think he's currently got the voice. He's certainly got talent but I think he's got a lot of training ahead to move out of that. I hope he gets the training to see what he could really do.

see I'm the other way around...I hate opera, but I can dig this, atleast admire it I guess
