I'm not 100% on banning guns, but I still think that's a lame as fuck argument.
Well the reasoning being that it works. In all countries where they banned the types of guns used in massacres, such crimes were eliminated almost entirely.

Or at least cut down greatly.
That said, it probably wouldn't work that well here in the US, at least not immediately. For one thing, it's a guaranteed right to own firearms, and the limit on that particular freedom is pretty hazy.
For two, we have more guns that people in the country. Getting those guns off the street to the point it becomes difficult for criminals to get their hands on them would be a herculean task in and of itself. There'd be people who'd resist it, people who'd hide them, and people who would store them away to sell later at a profit. It'd take decades and likely billions of dollars clearing the country of guns.
For three, in case you haven't been keeping an eye on the news, America is full to bursting with some really goddamn squirrelly people, and these squirrelly people are just looking for an excuse to take up an armed conflict with who the fuck ever. You've got your far left, your far right, your revolutionary fetishists, and, hell, fucking mean grandmas all itching to do something really stupid for little reason. Broaching the subject of gun control on the level of what Australia and now New Zealand have attempted is akin to approaching a warehouse full of powder kegs after someone's set your jacket on fire.
There is no easy solution to the people getting shot up en masse problem here in the US, and there isn't likely to be one anytime soon. It might take another 10 schools full of shot up kindergarteners before we'll even flinch on the issue, and even then, someone's likely to scream CRISIS ACTORS!
...we've become a nation of very high strung people, needless to say.

If anything was going to work in the US, it would have been after that HUGE student led movement a year ago, which had pointed out how corrupt the government was on the issue, and even that didn't make a difference. So nothing will I'm afraid. Only change that will ever happen will be if it's from the top, and Obama did his best and even he couldn't change things. Though he did get some minor stuff in, which Trump later removed.

Plus, in the US, the solution is always more guns, never less.
Though, for one, even Scalia said there can be limits on the right to own firearms. It's just that there is no political will to do it, even if the majority of US supports it.

Yeah Trump's solution to the school shootings was that the students should have had guns. Leadership at its best.

The constitution doesn't say anything about what type of gun you are allowed to have. You can't own cannons or bomber-jets of nuclear arms. So there is already a limitation on the type of weapon you can own. It's simple. Only allow simple hunting rifles. At least a meter long. Only one bullet in the gun at a time. Manual reload.
Also the consitution says you can own a gun. It's doesn't say where you can store or bring your gun. So also simple. Allow the rifles for hunting or sports. But you need to store it somewhere else (at the gunclub, or a specialized storage space). You can't bring your gun home.

First of all, the majority of guns are registered. If you have a registered gun, you have to turn it in. Or you get a hefty fine. If they catch you with a gun, even if it is a first-time offense, $5000 fine and/or a week in jail. 2nd offense = 3 months in jail. 3rd offense = 10 years in jail. The US has put over a million of its citizen in jail for drugs-related offenses (which are typically rather harmless). So I'm sure the US will have no problem putting a million of its citizens in jail for trying to keep their guns.

If people resist, just shoot them. That seems to work fine for the police today. Continue doing that.
See ? Easy solutions. If the US really wants it, they can do it.
