Hello everybody, this is my first (and hopefully not last) post at this forum (Been active at the Thief forums for some time, though)! :)
I lent Morrowind from my friend yesterday and impatiently installed it on my super cutting-edge Pentium II 500 MHz (I even met the minimum requirements, wow!), 128 MB RAM, Voodoo 3 3000. I hoped it would work but unfortunately, it didn't - I keep getting Render Creation Error: "Unknown frame buffer mode" when I run it. The problem is, I think, that I can't choose a resolution in the settings dialog because there are no resolutions available to choose from.
So, the question is, is it possible to run Morrowind (R)(TM) on a Voodoo (C)(R) graphic card? I haven't downloaded any patches yet but before I do, I'd like to know if I'm not just wasting my time... :erg:

Voodoo + [anything] = pwn3d
Get rid of the voodoo. You deserve better.

Hi Preno, welcome to Morrowind TTLG!
I don't claim to be a computer expert, but I did quite a lot of informal research about this time last year, when I was looking to buy the sleek little baby I'm now sitting in front of. From what I remember reading, you haven't got the slightest chance of getting Morrowind to work with a Voodoo. It's technically impossible, AFAIK.
Graphics card aside, it looks to me like your PC just barely scrapes through with the minimum requirements. This just won't cut it when playing a game as resource-hungry as Morrowind; using a PC with the bare minimum would return such poor performance that the game would hardly be worth playing.
I know this is a downer :( I was so frustrated at waiting six years to play Morrowind, then not being able to because my old PC was so useless, that I practically bought this one I have now just to be able to play. I do use it for other things, of course, but Morrowind was what really motivated me to start PC-hunting.
If you want to enter the wonderful world of Morrowind, you'll need a significant upgrade, I think. Needless to say, this is going to depend on your finances (or lack thereof) :erg:
Let us know what you decide, and in the meantime, feel free to hang round and socialise!

Well, this wasn't really unexpected, was it? But still I hoped it would at least run (even though it would certainly be very choppy) on my comp... ah well, looks like I'll really have to get a new one and get rid of this obsolete scrap iron.:erg:
Unfortunately, judging by the look at my finances, this is not going to happen before the next year (if it does happen). So until then, goobye, and thanks for your help.:(

hey, just go out and get yourself a really cheap Radeon 7000 or 7200. my nvidia ti4200 64 mb died on me mid-game. so i scrapped around in my oldies box, found my old Radeon 7200 and it ran fine. (esp with the new Catalyst drivers!!! sweet!!)
i had a P3 800 with 384 mb RAM and with the nVidia, it was pretty nice. but i was REALLY surprised that the Radeon 7200 witn 32 mb RAM was JUST as nice and not as choppy for some reason. less lag in Balmora than the nVidia, too.
you can get them REALLY cheap right now. i saw a couple on ebay for $25. it will carry you over till you can upgrade. the game is definitely worth it.
V***V
now the proud owner of:
P4 2533
512 mb RAM
Radeon 9700 PRO, 128 MB
LiteOn CDRW
LiteOn DVD
Win XP Pro SP1
Sound Audigy 2
DX 9
*sighs happily* not EVEN any loading times AT ALL and Balmora is a gorgeous city, that speeds along at 90 FPS

Has to be a DX8-compliant card, if I remember right.
