Morrowind has messed up my WIN200 system.
I was playing this game when the PC suddenly frooze.
After restarting many critical services just could not be started.
I tried troubleshooting it but it just won't work since I couldn't use any of the administrative tools.
Some other guy had also posted a problem on the same lines but like most others I overlooked it.
This is the only game I have played that has DESTROYED my system.

I run Win2K and haven't experienced any problems.
I realize that's probably not very helpful to you right now. Have you contacted either Microsoft or Bethesda's technical support?

Actually I do not want to contact MS.
I don't think they woukd be able to help me in this case. Oviously since it was working fine before they are going to say its the game problem.
As for Bethedsa if I contact them they are going to give answers like virus, wrong drivers etc.
Nevertheless I have reinstalled 2000, and its working fine.

:p Um, I have Win2k pro and haven't had any problems. Maybe your hardware is outdated? I am assuming that you are using one of the supported video cards. I had to buy a $200 card because my $50 card was crap. Your install probably messed up somehow and damaged your registry. When you reloaded the system that fixed the problem and it shouldn't happen again. The worst thing that's happened to me playing Morrowind was that the game just turned off. I was back on my desktop and had to restart the game. The good news is that this only happens when I'm trying to reload a saved game so I haven't lost any data.

i know you said that you lost some critical services, but were you able to use the un-installer that came with the game or the one located in the control panel?
If you are able to completely uninstall it, try that and rebooting your machine. I do have a feeling that there is something else at work on your system to cause such grief.
Did you have Direct X 8.1 on your machine before? Perhaps breaking down the installation might help.. try installing direct x and rebooting before installing morrowind.

Does morrowind really run without DX8.1?
I thought that was the minimum requirement.
As for trying all thoe troubleshooting stuffs, nothing helped and now I can't try anything I have already reinstalled(repairing didn't work).
