I'm curious as to how the engine for Morrowind was developed. Compared to most other games I have, Morrowind runs slowly on my computer. Although I don't blame it all that much seeing as how I have an outdated system, I still get better frame rates in Unreal Tournament 2003.
Has anyone else experienced a similar gameplay lag? (This does not apply to you lucky P4 3.06GHz geeks) :cheeky:
By the way, Morrowind DOES indeed rock. :thumb:

AFAIK, Morrowind runs slow (that is, slower than most games) on everyone's computer. It's a resource-intensive hoggy application. They cram a lot of detail into each "cell," and it is simply processor- and graphics-intensive.
I get better framerates out of UT2K3, GTA3, and other contemporary or newer games. I have a P3 600mhz (old hound), so I had to dial down the draw distance significantly. Have you tried fiddling with the graphics settings to get a more desireable framerate?

The reason Morrowind is so much slower than eg UT2003 is that it doesn't have BSP trees. It uses the NetImmerse engine, which is capable of creating BSP trees. It was a design decision not to go down that route in order to allow the plugin system to work as it does. The environments in UT2003 don't change, whilst just about anything in Morrowind can be changed with a couple of clicks, with no pre-rendering.

Hmm, that makes sense. ;)
Is there anything you can edit manually like configuration files that will allow you to increase performance? :cheeky:

Well you could google around for the "Morrowind Optimizer" but the game engine is one that was designed to cut certain corners that lead to CTD's and instability in order to present the high level of details that it does.

Yeah, Striker posted something for the INI that helped me out, though I've noticed a considerably longer cell load for Vivec... IIRC, it was the toggle "DontThreadLoad" that caused this effect.
Speaking about FPS Opt., the app just shut down on me a few days ago. I tried toggling novice mode on and off to reset everything, fuck, I even logged out and destroyed my beautiful LiteStep uptime meter (at that point, 42d 6:18:35). However, running FPS Opt. with Morrowind or even starting the game using FPS Opt. does nothing. I can't even change the viewdistance with mousewheel anymore. The only significant change I've made lately was installing Bloodmoon and updating all the plugins I have to 1.3...
Anyone else having this problem?
EDIT: Nevermind, It's been fixed.
