Question is, do the books have as much half-naked manflesh parading around giving women hard-ons as the movies seem to? That would explain why, when I asked a lady friend of mine why she's reading Twilight, her response was, 'because it's good'.
The Twilight saga is popular because it preys on the insecurities many women have by assuring them that somewhere out there their own personal hunk awaits, a veritable romance book cover god who just so happens to find their average and unspectacular ass spectacular.

Haven't read a word of the books or seen any of the movies, beyond the few second clips you get in ads and the like, but I already know I hate Twilight with a passion. If only because I'm sick of seeing that Twattinson bloke everywhere.
Wanted to balance this vitriolic post out with something witty and amusing, but could only come up with that old lesbian vampire joke :(

Oh the horror.
This kind of thing makes me think it's more than (or really, less than) some pulp fantasy fulfilment. There's been loads of that around for ages. This is doing something else. I haven't read it but it sounds like it's just sooo basic and stripped back; it's just how beautiful and chiseled Eddy is and his endless breathy obsessive words.
Ok so I can't dispute the fantasy thing really, but this is like the laser guided endorphin bomb version. It makes otherwise sensible people terribly excited, while knowing it's shit a lot of the time.
Maybe the soaps and the romance novels and the youth fiction have been getting a bit too convoluted lately, so this back to basics stuff can cut through. I don't know.

Well, there was one good point:

Men feel perfectly comfortable slathering their chests in greasepaint and screaming like half-naked ninnies at football games, but women too often over-explain their passions, apologizing for being too girly or liking something too trashy.
I watched the movie as sort of a background work, because the main character of my own new book is a Twilight-fan. It was even more crap than I expected, ultra-horrible acting, ridiculous story (it's like I fell madly in love with a chocolate bar or a juicy steak) and so forth. But I'm happy they made the film, otherwise I'd have to read the novel!

To be fair to it (the 1st film) it does what it sets out to do very well. It might be all teen angsty emo foppish garbage but its
good teen angsty emo foppish garbage, iyswim. I watched it on a loooong flight back from Taiwan. I also watched The Day the Earth Stood Still, Max Payne, Madagascar 2 and some of Death Race 2000. Twilight was the best film out of the bunch (though Maddy 2 was amusing at times).

It seems if you read the books before watching the movies, you're bound to hate the movies. I personally liked Twilight for the music, so the Saga seems more appalling than appealing.

WHAT?
I'm not terribly picky when I watch a movie and only expect it to provide fluffy light entertainment, but Twilight was a BAD, BAD movie. Didn't you notice the astounding lack of acting skills of the main couple? The horrible dialogue? Those weird leaps in the plot that would make you go WTF if you didn't guess they've clumsily chopped off some very large slabs of the original story (at least I hope they did, or I've lost all hope of people ever again appreciating good literature)?
On the other hand, I really enjoyed Max Payne

I hated the books, and I'll surely hate the movie(s), so I prevent myself from having a bad mood by avoiding both.

WHAT?
I didn't say it was a good movie but it does what it says on the tin.
Remember the old vamp movies of the 80s that we (certainly I) loved? Lost Boys, Fright Night and so on? Watch them again - the acting is awful but they still work. Twilight works and it works well. I'm never going to own it and it should never, ever be put in any hall of fame but if you can't see how it just does its mission statement perfectly you've lost some sense of your youth.
And Max Payne was just terrible. There were no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Thanks, that explains it. I'm not too sure I'd want to pipe this explanation back to her, though. I've had enough handbags swung in my general direction to last me a lifetime.
It's true, women really do keep bricks in their handbags. :(
