Is there any real proof of this? I read the Twilight books out of morbid curiosity, and yes, she writes poorly. However, I seriously doubt the horde of teenage girls (and women over 30 who still entertain the fantasies of their adolescence) reading Twilight would be picking up other novels, let alone classics, if they'd never heard that dreamboat vampires can fall in love with them.
Although you're probably right about the teenage girls, most women I know over 30 certainly read, even if it is trashy romance novels. I certainly don't want this to seem like "if you aren't walking around spouting Keats then gtfo, but there are plenty of modern books that are far from being dense classics, but are still well written.

There are plenty of utterly mediocre films and books that have been widely viewed or read which don't gather the same level of incensed review because it isn't as cool to give them a bashing. Still, much of the Internet still considers it mandatory to inform others that they are cool enough to hate whatever teen fad is currently doing the rounds
Maybe, but I'd find it hard to think of anything that has obtained this level of saturation since the Da Vinci Code, which I felt similarly about. Do you really think this is about being cool on the internet? I can only speak for myself, but I also got frustrated by my friends raving about Transformers 2, and I got sick of all the girls at my college telling me how deep My Sister's Keeper was. I have managed to steer relatively clear of Twilight, and the only reason that I'm a bit fed up with it now is the sheer histeria of the coverage of it. It's honestly hard to watch any commercial TV or read a magazine right now without being confronted by Patterson's aloof gaze.

"Incensed review" wasn't really directed at your display of mild irritation, but I still give little credit to the thought that successful trash is pushing more worthy works of art aside

Say what you want about Twilight, Patterson himself is cool.

:weird: I think I need the sarcasm detection thread.

With the werewolf love triangle thing New Moon has going we're not far off the chakat thread either.

Have you seen him talking about the screaming fans to interviewers? He isn't shy about saying that some of them are nuttards and wierdos. I thought it quite refreshing, and he is nothing like the character he plays - much more... demure.

Plus when asked how he 'got into the role', he admitted that the more he had to read the script, the more he loathed the character, so he played him like "someone who hates himself". :D

Sounds like he has understandable problems identifying with his role as a teen dream. Question is if he's actually capable of more or just another Luke Perry.

Well, you have to admit that if they weren't paying attention to Twilight they would be paying attention to other things, things which may or may not be better.
Also, I'm glad to see someone else joined me on Team Bella. I was starting to feel overly pervy.
