Spare a thought for those people who, far from being emo, are fairly sensible, and happen to have an interest in myths, legends, monsters etc. Many of them are going to get a Twilight book for Christmas.
(I once got a DVD of 2 Fast 2 Furious because I happen to like cars)

Well I'll stand up to have you all throw eggs at me. And I know I'm giving the impression of being Cletus the slack-jawed yokel since I defend Harry Potter as well.
I read a lot of very different books; classics, fantasy, porn, biographies. And I have read the Twilight series and enjoyed the first 3 books. I agree that they are not high literature and have moral issues that mean I wouldn't want a daughter to read them without discussing them. But they're pure escapist fluff with an overly maternal author who refuses to let anything bad actually happen to her characters.
I deal with HIV/AIDS, domestic violence and vulnerable children every day, and sometimes I enjoy ridiculous youth oriented entertainment.
I don't understand the vehemence with which people hate the series, maybe it's tied to the current wave of popularity and pervasiveness. Though I'd think most people would be self aware enough to just avoid a teen vamp romance if it's not their cup of tea.
And I have mad respect for a woman who was drowning in maternal fugue and successfully created work that has been enjoyed by millions of people.

Yeah, we all have Tall Poppy Syndrome - we hate it because it's popular, it's also the same case with Dan Brown... Jesus fucking Christ, what a stupid non-argument.

It makes sense to me, Twilight is more than popular it's ubiquitous. And having something you dislike constantly rammed down your throat is only going to increase that dislike.

I hate it because it's shit, and life is too short to put up with shit. Why not read a good book instead?
