Thanks for the tips guys. I did check both out, but the installation worries me. I'm not good at doing that stuff. If it's just a matter of extracting to the games main folder, I have no problem, however there's extra steps involved in both of these as far as I can tell, and I'm always afraid I'll screw up the whole game.
After screwing around some more I've got it looking pretty good, although I still may take a chance and install one of the mods.
I have another question though and it's pretty stupid. I have an Okaban? rifle and put a scope on it, however when you look through the site, there are 4 or 5 ways to line up a shot, but not matter which line I use, I can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn. Is there some trick to using a scope?
Thanks.

I'm using an Obokan + a scope as well, and I find it easier to hit the targets by not using the scope. :o

Your accuracy depends on several factors:
Accuracy of weapon (You can see the stats for it if you select it in your inventory).
Whether you are moving or not.
Whether you are crouched or not (Minimal impact, but can help a touch).
The Okaban isn't that accurate a rifle to begin with, so don't expect to headshot anything more than a few dozen yards away. Scopes just help you see further, they don't improve the accuracy of the wespon they're attached to, so while you might be able to aim at someone halfway across the map, don't expect to hit anything with entry-level rifles like the Okaban.
:edit:
Your best bet is to aim for the chest and give them a 3 shot burst, repeat if necessary. Not ideal, but you'll have to find better rifles before you can start really sniping.

Thanks. I thought that myself, seeing the rifle was pretty common that may have something to do with it. But when I saw the lines in the scope, like 4 or 5 of them, I thought maybe you were supposed to line them from either top to bottom or visa versa. I noticed when trying to hit some guy in a tower, my shots were hitting some iron rails over his head. Makes sense really as the gun isn't the most accurate. Which is one thing that impressed me with the game. The games weapons feel clunky at first, but once you get used to them, seem pretty realistic. Seems like if I'm far away and aim more at their chest, I can sometimes get a head shot. Maybe from the kickback from the gun? Wouldn't think the trajectory would be that realistic in a video game, but maybe it is. And if it is, that's pretty freakin cool.

In STALKER, just aim with the topmost chevron's point with all other weapons except the Vintorez, where the rest of the chevrons can come in useful when you're trying to hit somebody in the head.
Of all the games that feature this soviet/russian scope, I think only Operation Flashpoint models it correctly enough for all the markings to be actually useful (in that you can use it to get headshots on the first bullet even at a moving target that's a long distance away).

Does anyone know of a good darker nights mod? (that's easy to install and compatible w/1.004). My very old 19 in. (not flat screen), crapped the bucket and I now have a 15 in. flat screen. For some reason everything is lighter on this monitor and no matter how I screw around with the gamma and brightness in the game, I can't seem to get it right.
I tried dynamic light on objects, and was able to get it perfect, however whenever I went indoors (the trader), my FPS went down to like 5. Weird, because outdoors ran fine.
Here's a little trick.
When you change to wholly indoor levels x16, brain scorcher etc, Stalker disables the sun. If you just walk underground or indoors in an outdoor level the sun is still rendered.
So when you fight in the arena, for example, and your juddering FPS are making the fights too hard, just whip the console down with tilde and type: "r2_sun 0" minus the quotes for a big FPS increase with no difference in visuals.
r2_sun 1 enables, naturally

Thanks tox. I switched back to dynamic lighting on objects to try what you suggested but found I don't need to do that. I'm playing in 800 X 600 with everything at max and the games running great and looks a lot better. Apparently it's only the bar where I get the massive slowdown for some reason. When I head back there I'll give it a try.
Another question though. I tried the darker nights mod and did everything it said, but it's not working. Perhaps not compatible with 1.004?
