Press and hold F, item names pop up in the HUD then...

I bound the flashlight to 'F' a long time ago. I tried looking around but can't see this as an option in-game. . .

It may very well have been lying on the ground, I can't for my life see weapons in STALKER when they aren't in a crate or other "storage", they just become invisible in the environment like Sam Fisher into pitch black shadows. It would be lovely if there was an item glow mod for the game, my eyes don't do the job well enough.
I seem to remember it was in a backpack stash between the train and the tunnel wall.

I did go in there when I was in the area, and I just found craploads of artifacts, no sign of a gun. At the end of the tunnel there is a fire and two beds made by stalkers. I was hoping there was a body somewhere in that place.
Offhand that sounds like the wrong end of the tunnel to me. Try from the other side...

Stupid me, only checking out the wrong side. :o
I'll get my ass over there after I do some stuff in the military warehouses, though that gun is hardly worth it now that I got the GP37. . .

There is indeed a body at the end of the tunnel, which is where you find the modified Viper. The body even shows up on the minimap when you're outside, on the way to the Agroprom transition point (at first I thought the body would be outside, so I tried to climb the hill to my right, but the radiation is a killer). The backpack that Toxicfluff refers to is just a regular stash, which is close to the entrance of the tunnel.

Out of curiosity, why is it such a valuable gun? Do the modifications give it perfect accuracy? That'd be something to kill for in STALKER, especially early in the game.

It's modified to fire the more common 9mm ammo so you're never short of bullets.
Bjossi on 11/9/2007 at 15:01
That's certainly a good thing early on, but the 9mm ammo isn't so common later in the game afaik. You'll be NATOing enemies to death for the most part, like I'm doing in my current runthrough. :o

Yeah, it's great at the start, but once you get Strelok's modified rifle it becomes somewhat outclassed.
I think you can add a silencer to it, making it one of the few fully automatic weapons you can suppress, but I've tried so many different mods that I've lost track which weapons can be silenced or not. :erg:
