I'll be putting a new PC together this year so I want to get as much things as I can out of the way right now to not have quadruple doubts later. I'm pretty sure of my entire rig right now, except this little turd.
Now RPS' Plumber Guy recently made an article about monitors in which he lists four great deals. Except they are all 16:9, and since I'm a hardcore foaming-at-the-mouth PC gamer I simply refuse to have anything to do with that aspect ratio.
Since I've been on 1024x768 and then 1280x1024 pretty much my entire life, I really don't feel like I have high expectations. I'm pretty set on 22" 1680x1050 - basically some extra horizontal space over what I'm used to. Budget is, well let's not get crazy here, $320/200GBP max.

They've all pretty much given up making non 16:9 ratios now, haven't they? You might get a 16:10 still somewhere but that's about it.

I got my flatmate a cheap LG W2220P to plug a PC and his Xbox 360 (through HDMI). It's a nice IPS screen with 16:10 ratio in 1680x1050. The colors aren't that nice out of the box, fortunately the results become much better after a bit of calibration (basically, switching to sRGB color profile). I like it as much as my old and faithful (TN) Hyundai W220D.
There are still some of those floating around french online stores for cheap, don't know about the rest of the world.

So basically, by requirements are so low and the 1680x1050 so unpopular/outdated that whatever I pick will be fine eh.

That's right! No one likes 16:10 monitors anymore, so you can finally go widescreen and still keep your contrarian cred. :thumb:

If you're set on 22'' 1680x1050 go looking for the Dell 2209WA. I payed £210 for it back in '09, so if you can find stock for it still it should be under your price cap. It's an 8 bit IPS panel and the only thing I could've wanted more from it is 1920x1200, since you can't get 120Hz on IPS yet. You read the RPS bit, you don't need further explanations.
If you wanna go up a notch it looks like Dell's just launched the U2412M which is supposed to be going for under $300. 24'' 16:10 full HD IPS, but I don't know whether this is an 8 bit panel like the 2209WA or 6 bit like its (16:9) U2211H successor.

Sounds nice, but of course it's unavailable here.
[Edit]
Okay let me sum it up for whoever cares, which is myself: it's impossible to get an IPS 16:10 1680x1050 monitor in this country. So I'm left with about a dozen of TN monitors that all have nearly damn same listed specifications and yet one can be about twice as expensive as the other. Right. Currently I'm shifting towards LG E2210T-BN, because it's LED. If I can't get IPS and 2ms response time is bullshit, then at least I will get a bloody LED! I mean shit, anything is better than what I'm (
