Post some moments here that stand out as memorable and unique that make Thief stand out from other games to you. I'll start:
-The moment when you're sitting in a dark corner not two inches from a guard's face and praying he doesn't see you.
-The moment when you're jumping from carpet to carpet and praying mid-jump you don't land on the tile.
-The moment when you're picking a lock in bright light and hoping you can finish before a guard sees you.

-the moment when 5 zombies are closing in on you and you hope you will finish lockpicking fast enough
-the moment when you realise you cannot get out of THC
-the moment you get instakilled by the haunt in Truarts basement
-when Gamall reveals her true form or when Garret loses an eye

- The moment you see Angelwatch looming high above you, despite already being on the rooftops.

- the frustrating but somehow funny time while searching for all the secrets and for the last damn coins
- the plot twist when the trickster revealed his true form. (I really thought I had beaten the game after finishing "Back to Cathedral") How could I be so naive? There were warning signs in the cutscene where Constantine introduced himself - something horrible will happen :ebil:
- the moment when you try to lockpick a door and you hear heavy steps approaching
- the moment when you realise that Thief 1 Missions are hard sometimes, Thief 2 Missions are even harder and some Fan Mission are so extremely hard, that Garrett even has to learn Japanese (see the last Elevator Missions).
- the James-Bond-like feeling I had when Garrett was exploring the mechanist submarine base in Thief 2
- The incredible deep atmosphere in the Hammerite Temple while reading the Hammerite verses
- the moment when a guard is asking loudly: "Is there anyone?" (in German "Ist da jemand?") and you hold your breath

A wounded guard running away and then coming back with a couple of others.

I think it's mainly the immersive atmosphere Thief so special. It's the moments where you can suspend your disbelief and get engrossed in the gameplay that it shines.

I love hearing the conversations and the guards talking to themselves - the ultimate in voyeurism.

That giggling laughter in The Sword.
