Is the title of this FM a pun? This is my favorite mission so far, but the only weapon I've found so far are the
molative cocktails
I'm stuck near the very beginning. The portal has been opened, and I have found a north key in front of a door in the area. Where do I go from here? None of the Mechanists seem exactly helpful . . .

I would not exactly call this a 'key hunt', but you do have to look closely for them. And this game, as you will soon see hevily relies on trigger events.

ok, the portal has activated, a bunch of haunts are chasing me everywhere, I can't find any weapons and where is this key? Very pretty effects, but it's kinda frustrating so far! :(

Amen to that nicked. At least Island of Madness gave you the option of ghosting the enemies when you still had no weapons . . .
The key I found was in the cathedral where the portal was, you have to hang a right when you come in, and look at the floor in front of the door. Of course, at this point you have about 5 haunts after you, so get ready to run your ass off.
Still hoping for information on where to use that key . . .

I was able to look around at the beginning by locking the haunts in the chapel. Then, when I wanted to look around the inside, I got them to chase me then locked them out of the chapel. Try doing that.

So...the key is only there AFTER the haunts attack?

There are actually
two
keys in the chapel.
