Here's the situation:
My copy of Stalker (legitimate copy) is patched to 1.0003.
I want to use the realistic weapon and Alive mods.
I download these mods, and install them as described, by making a "gamedata" folder in Stalker's main directory, and placing the config, weapons etc folders into this folder.
I then change the file fsgame.ltx to put "true" where it was previously false, so that the game uses the data in the new gamedata folder as priority.
The game starts fine. But as soon as I start a new game or load a saved game it crashes without fail.
I have even tried the mod manager program, with same results.
Has anybody else had this problem? I am doing exactly how the instructions describe installation, and I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work.

Are you sure the mods are compatible with 1.0003? 1.0003 is obsolete.
Take notice that with many mods you have to start a new game, they won't work with saved games made with vanilla Stalker. Also, saved games made with some mods will stop to work with the mods uninstalled.
Check readme and update Stalker to version the mods require, install one mod first, start new game and see if it works, then try another one.

I installed Stalker again JUST to play these mods. And I installed 1.0005 initially, and it was crashing also, so I installed 1.0003 as somebody said 1.0005 is useless for those who don't play MP anyway.
And yes, as I was installing Stalker just to play these mods, yes, it was a new game.
And I tried it with only one, not both.
No joy.

Whoever told you 1.0005 is useless is a bit off- they were thinking of 1.0006.

1.0005 also introduces MP fixes only. The last SP fixes were in 1.0004.

Well, I don't see how it would affect 1.004 mods, then. I know there's something you have to alter for mods to work, but I'll be damned if I know what.

did you try starting the game WITHOUT mods ?
does it even run then. 'cause then you have troubles with that, not the mods.
btw, I run STALKER 1.0005 perfectly well with ModManager and ~ 12 different mods.
sorry to ask that, but you do have a PC with all drivers patched to the newest version and a decent graphics card ?

Yes, Stalker runs absolutely fine now without any mods installed, and has done in the past (I'm at Yantar, wondering how much more fun I would have had with the mods installed...).
That thing you have to modify, dethtoll, is probably that little file where you have to change one "false" to be "true". And that's done.
It's very annoying, because there is no indication about why. There are no error messages. Just an instant crash to desktop.
edit: Okay, I reinstalled it with version 1.0005, and using ONLY Alive, it works. So I guess it was version incompatibility, and that realistic weapons mod didn't work with 1.0003 or 1.0005.
So, does anybody know a decent weapon mod (something that doesn't require about fifteen bullets to put down a human being...) which works with 1.0005?

sounds like the wrong stance with the wrong weapon over the wrong distance.
if you are in yantar you should already have good weapons and everybody go down after 1 headshot......(remember the orange ammo !), so i never searched for weapons mods only....
other mods i can only recommend:
OblivionLost (compatible with 1.0005), incorporates many things AIive has as well
Priboi Story (comp. with 1.005), totally new storyline, sequel, you play a military guy
additionially I use the SharperTextures+Float32 mods for graphics and
less generic bandits+ siros weaponskins if not already incorporated into the mod.
if you want a hardcore-over-the-top-only-the-most-insane-survive gameplay, use Fatraps RunAndGun FPS Mod. it's insane on veteran/hell.
my top-mod is OblivionLost. it has the best desperate atmosphere imo.
right now I'm playing Priboi, it awesome so far.
