Thanks for the information!
The issue last time I've played Morrowing was both in FPS and in cell-loading times, which was annoyong to hell; going from Vivec to a nearby farm would take several minutes, most of them waiting for cells to load amnd for my HD (virtual memory I think) to "grind".

EDIT: I've found a (
http://www.tweaktown.com/guides/316/the_elder_scrolls_iii_morrowind_tweak_guide/index.html) tweaking guide for Morrowind - I hope this will make this game run at a playable speed :)
EDIT2: Is the "Improved No-Glow" mod script-heavy?
PeeperStorm on 2/7/2006 at 15:56
I haven't downloaded it, but I think the "no glow" mod doesn't rely on scripts at all.

The Cliff Racer and Slaughterfish ones? The Illuminated Order? Richer Traders? Fuller Bodies? Flee AI Tweaks?
None of those overfill any areas with scripts. Even if they did, I wouldn't play the game without the Illuminated Order!
You might want to familiarize yourself with the Construction Set. You can pretty much answer any question you have about a mod by digging through it in the CS.

Also, does an HD defrag help performance?
Yes, it helped me a lot when I was trying to run it on an older machine or when I tried to run Oblivion on my current machine. GameBryo engine optimization really sucks (did they even try to optimize it ?) when it comes to RAM / cache and hard disk access (it sucks for a lot of other things too :( ).
My method for ultimate Morrowind/Oblivion/Game performance :
* Optimize the settings and .ini
* Delete the pagefile, make a lot of free space on the drive, defrag as many times as I can (until no file at all is fragmented)
* Recreate a pagefile (I set up mine around 1.5GB max) and shut down the computer
* Open the computer and clean the dust, remove the fans and clean them really good (essential step !)
* On a fresh start shut down all useless processes through a little batch script
* Overclock my graphics card to 4/5 of the max overclocking rate (CPU and memory)
* Turn on the room air conditioner (essential step too !)
* Enjoy the best performance possible on my laptop !

cheese, you guys are running alot. I just want a simple mod that makes the distant grass look better, and maybe that pokemon mod to capture creatures and use them to summon them. Will that lag the game much. Also, can you uninstall a mod?
Curunir on 3/7/2006 at 14:10
Shadowlord - there's this little sweet mod manager that will install/uninstall mods for you. The best part is that it also works for manually installed plugins that you extracted to the Data Filed directory.
On startup the bugger scans all custom mods you have (might take a while) and then lets you manage the mods and effectively uninstall mods. I suppose it scans file dependencies, that is, what .esp mod file references what texture/mesh/etc files and uninstalls both the mod .esp and the dependent additional files. Get it here:

Also, PeeperStorm, please do tell why you like Illuminated Order so much. I have considered getting it and though the screens were pretty good, all that "become a Lich" thing sort of turned me off. Ideally, tell us if it conflicts with other major landmass mods.

I hardly understood what you just said, but thanks

It's a whole batch of new quests that take you to very interesting new places in a way that's well integrated with existing Elder Scrolls lore. I'd rate the quests overall as being better than what you find in the original game. You get access to some fun new toys too, and the "become a lich" thing is entirely optional. Also, if you're a fan of a certain rock band you might appreciate the in-jokes.
For potential conflicts with mods that add landmass I refer you to the readme file, which details where all of the above-ground modifications take place.
