Hipster pls.
Just how is it suddenly generic and ruined? Ok, so it's a little less abstract, but just because it has a little more than a white sterile landscape and some more voice acting going on doesn't label it generic.
I don't know where anyone said it was ruined, oh grumpy fanboi. But it is more generic. It's in the design of the buildings, the guard uniforms, the colour schemes. They're all polished, but none of them maintain the same aesthetic as the previous one. (which is I think because those visual designers don't work there anymore)
Now, instead of looking like, well...hyper real Mirror's Edge, it looks more "Futuristic" like we've seen a fair bit in films and games of late. Beveled edges of plastic and glass, over complicated 'cool' constructions etc etc. Much less distinctive. ME1 was more striking for being actually not that unfamiliar design wise, but did a lot simply with space and colour. It was really quite remarkable.
Anyway, as far as open world goes, in the last game there was quite a great deal of depth and nuance to the level designs shown, as far as route finding and just simply having the option to use different moves to get further ahead.
They did actually grasp quite precisely that if a player is going -this- fast at -that- point they're going to be able to make jump X instead of going around. And often this was something you wouldn't discover until you were quite skilled at the game (or would not believe it was impossible until you saw someone do it). The problem was they weren't really able to make people aware of this and balance failure and investigation, trial and error etc in a way that brought players through the game.
So I think if the people who thought like that are still there and they have been refining this level design philosophy over the years, they should be going through this open world of theirs and adding all the little extra ridges and gutters and railings that can make a nice deep selection of running possibilities in every direction. As well as setting highly skilled challenges and explorations to find by yourself etc. I think it could actually be done, so here's hoping.

The message I'm getting from the gameplay reviews is that, even as open world, the actual paths you take via the way-point system are rather linear, in the style of the first game, to get you from A to B. Going off path means you're really putting yourself on a set path to another location.
I also understood that it's mission based. So the set missions will be the puzzles and more linear tracks like the last game, and the outside world is just the hub to get you to the mission entry-points where the core gameplay takes place.
All this is to say I don't think it's going to differ so radically from the model of the first game as people might expect.

That's what I imagine too. Less
GTA, more
Mirrorvania.

I call it more detail. You call it generic. I find the word
generic to mean a bad thing at least in the context it was given, and yeah, nobody said "ruined", only implied it with all the negativity. My bad.
I'm still unsure myself how I feel about the added layer of detail. The guards do look pretty much the same. The color scheme is almost the same, but with the addition of the black color. There is also a more noticeable darkness component (nighttime mostly) which is probably my least favorite thing about everything I've seen so far (right now at least; I might grow on it). I hope it's 80 - 90% daylight so that the colors stay vivid and contrasting for most of the game. And I don't see much difference in the buildings myself. Ok, some have some black in them this time around. I hope those magicky floating yellow things that point you in the right way or checkpoint you or whatever, I hope those will be optional, with the chance to turn them off.
On the flipside, there were some cherry blossoms in the background. Probably one of those things you meant with "generic" cause they've been used in at least one other game. I just appreciate the new refreshing color they give in the background.
The darkness component with added detail does perhaps make the game less striking than the most striking game ever made (which is probably the original). Maybe only the 2nd or within top 10 of most striking games. But if the game is good and their vision blends well with the game, I'll probably grow to love it more this way.
But yeah, overall man I want to see and play this game. I'm not a big gamer and all, but to me this is my most anticipated game since Dishonored.

Not quite ruined, but it's hard to get excited about a game that's entirely generic. If I'm going to plunk down $60 USD for a game and use my time on it should give me a gameplay experience that is different from the games I already own. The first game accomplished that because there isn't anything else out there which is quite like it.

Were you were being general, not saying that toward this game? Because we don't know enough about the game to make a conclusion like that, even if you would like to say that it's
somewhat generic (which is also debateable).

There was also a nice big chunk of gameplay footage released recently.

Looking good!

I'm not super keen on the idea of it occasionally cutting to third person to show a "finishing move" animation, but the rest of the gameplay looks pretty much unchanged, movement-wise, so I may be willing to give it a pass. And maybe just not punch guys at all.

Is it 2010 again? This "criticism" was run into the ground whilst discussing DX:HR. It's been a common place feature since at least whenever God of War 1 came out, it's a bit redundant to moan about it at this point.
