I feel like there are some really clever ideas in the game, that they then immediately drop or consign to repetitive open-world activities instead of developing them further. I also feel like I have no idea what Faith is doing narratively; people complained about the story/writing/whatever in the first game being bad (I can't say I personally noticed) but Faith's objectives were pretty clear and easy to relate to. She's coming back from an injury, so she does some training. Then she's doing a routine courier mission, and for some reason the cops (who normally look the other way) start chasing her. You quickly discover that her sister is being framed for killing someone, and Faith spends the rest of the game sorting out what really happened and rescuing her sister. There's a forward thrust that I'm not feeling in Catalyst so far. I feel like I'm just fucking around with no real purpose or goal, generally just runnning towards an icon because some unlikable character asked me to do something involving hilariously awful fantasy tech jargon.
Oh, and fuck the game's repeated need to make it impossible to progress until you beat the shit out of people. I keep encountering stuff in the main missions where enemies spawn in and so I try to to flee (as you would in the first game) and it turns out that the exit to the level is inaccessible until they're unconscious and/or dead.

Started playing this yesterday. I can see why hardcore fans of the original, like Jason, might not like it. It feels more like a standard 2016 open-world actiongame than the original Mirror's Edge. Basically it's a Batman game, but instead of the traversal mechanics being grapple gun and batcape, it's parkour. And instead of Batman's bat-fighting, it's first person fisticuffs. I'm enjoying these mechanics tho, and I never cared for improving my times or finding the optimal routes in the original. Rather I just wanna explore the city in a fun way, so this is exactly what I want from a sequel.
I do have one big sticking point with it though, and I'm not sure if it's a bug or what, but my "boss" Noah will not shut the fuck up. After the last story mission I did, I've been doing sidemissions for an hour, and he keeps talking on the headset about a new restaurant in town. Every time I finish a sidemission, his blabbering starts anew. I've heard about the Crime Czar of Glass' new restaurant like 10 times by now. Shut the fuck up, Noah.

Faith, dearest of all my friends.

I was working on 100%ing this, but then I just stopped. And haven't gone back. When I'm playing it it has some of the same propulsive, addictive quality of the original, but at the same time I don't have the itch to jump back in and try to shave a couple of seconds off a run like I did with the original. It's kind of a shame. And I guess saleswise it ended up being about the same as the first, so support and community engagement have completely dried up already, which means the chances of DLC (story or otherwise) are pretty slim.

I did the collectible bits that were actually interesting (i.e. tagging the billboards) and skipped almost everything else.

I keep meaning to try this someday. But... Origin, Blecch.

What's wrong with Origin (besides being owned by EA)? From what I've seen, it's no Uplay or Windows Store. It's basically just another (or yet another) client to download and install. EA is still evil, though.

I've never really been bothered by Origin, but I'm not a big fan of the new client design. It also seems to require a massive update every single time I launch it, but that could just be the limited frequency with which I use it.

Okay, I've now leveled up all the relevant movement skills at the beginning, and I'm getting the hang (again) of how Faith handles. Welcome back, Mirror's Edge.
What I'll definitely try not to do is burn out on all the time trials, deliveries etc. At least at this point, they're too boring and samey and the open world all looks identical as far as I've seen. I think I'll stick to the story missions that, if I understand correctly, all have their own level design and are more in line with the first game. Once I've played those, I should also be at a point where just moving around and trying to be as fast as possible is enjoyable in itself, even if the environments are repetitive.
