Here's what I understand as an outsider looking in.
* Minecraft Bedrock, formerly Pocket Edition is now THE Minecraft as far as MS is concerned. It was retitled to just "Minecraft". Vanilla Minecraft is now "Minecraft: Java Edition".
* Bedrock now more or less has parity with Java Edition. The next major update v1.13 "Update Aquatic" will launch pretty much at the same time across all versions, including Java.
* Since the late 2017 "Better Together" update the game has cross-platform multiplayer across Windows 10, Xbox 1, Android, iOS and (some time within the next few months) Nintendo Switch. PS4 is the only hold-out because Sony doesn't want to play ball.
* Modders can monetise their work and sell it on Mojang's storefront. Premium expansion content you've purchased will carry across all platforms with a version of Bedrock.
The upcoming "Super Duper Graphics Pack" announced at the Xbox E3 2017 conference will launch on all versions of Bedrock, so including mobile and Switch. Obviously the likes of 4K textures will require a high-end PC or a Xbox 1 X, you will see the likes of new shaders on all Bedrock platforms. (
https://youtu.be/1JLPmF6pX50) Super Duper has delayed quite a few times because they have to do the likes of rewriting the entire graphics pipeline; the current release period is undetermined. Don't expect it "any time soon".

Unfortunately the Super Duper version isn't coming to the PS4 either, which is a shame as my oldest son (7) has been really looking forward to it.

Yup, Sony not wanting to do cross-platform MP kills some motivation to putting Bedrock onto PS4 any time soon; Super Duper is for Bedrock. I wouldn't be surprised if Bedrock comes to Sony platforms eventually because maintaining the legacy console versions will become an increasing waste of resources (FYI Better Together update replaced the legacy console versions with new Bedrock ports on Xbox 1 + some time this year Switch).

So is the creator of Minecraft proud of his creation, always standing by it etc? Or being like one of those one hit wonder song artists who avoid it like the plague and refuse to talk about it?
Fellow coders like Alexi Paijinov who developed Tetris have proudly stood by their works for all of time, but some see it as them having hit their peak too early and grow to dislike it.
Personally I'd be very happy if I ever managed to develop even a single game on THAT kinda level. And for the record I'd not even put Minecraft in the same league as Tetris, but it was t have the only comparison that came to mind.

The creator of Minecraft sold it to Microsoft for a few billion dollars. Since then he's been a right-wing nutcase twitter troll.

Well there you go. He went the later.

Guy hit the pop culture jackpot. Doesn't matter what he thinks about it. But I imagine he's proud of it since it was obviously a labor of love pet project in the earliest days.
I paid for it ages ago and the system doesn't recognize my account & won't allow me to reinstate it, which is kind of a drag but whatever... I play the version from 8 or so years ago anyway.
