Because I wanted your take. Your personal relevance. Plus the goad to make you do it.
Fair enough, I should know enough to give you the benefit of the doubt. ;)
His work is really much simpler* than you're making it out to be: he was seeking to divorce art from subjective experience, and express an ideal of universal harmony. Abstracting painting into geometric forms and primary colors was a way to reach this universality.
The philosophy that he was invested in was based on viewing mathematics as the only purity, and therefor he used a mathematical basis for his art, with the geometry, but sought to achieve balance in the work without being symmetrical.
He had a statement to make, and that was one method of making it. It may not resonate with you, but that doesn't mean that the statements aren't there, or that they're not culturally significant.
I personally find Mondrian pretty boring (though I love the hotel in LA). But I say that 90 years later - after his ideas have been absorbed into the cultural lexicon and gone from being new & interesting to cliche.
You'll never, however, catch me saying that it's not art, or lacks meaning. Well, not anymore, after I got a tongue lashing at MoMA last year in front of 'Broadway Boogie Woogie.' ;)
*/edit: but not simply about simplicity. ;)

To deny the importance of something without familiarizing yourself with the context that makes it important - and to then steadfastly refuse to consider that one lacks this context - is simply championing ignorance.

Perhaps then that is why I take it as such an affront RBJ. The universal harmony is all about complexity and subtlety to me. I keep looking for subtlety that is not there. Nothing is simple and there the beauty lies. Loops and and tricks of psuedo cul de sacs where hope is all but lost except for the human spirit which says "no, there is more". There is humanity. There is beauty. There is knowledge. There is indominable spirit.
Goddamn primary trees with primary leaves on or off. Complexity is beauty. Pattern difficult to discern at first glance but so lovely once you do. Do you recall noids paintings? I miss him. And I'm drunk. Do you know how hard it is to type while thus? So many corrections. But at least I post when I am. Another complexity. Thanks for coming back dude. Shit I'm on a jag.
Not simply about simplicity about simplicity is beyond my reckoning even on a good day I'm afraid. I think what pisses me off is that others not so highly touted could give more to more people if this weren't so highly praised.

I know what you're talking about with the complexity fetish. It's a lot more a style that resonates with me, too.
I remember when Noid posted screenshots of his falling-sand game creations and I thought holy fuck it takes a special kind of brain-scramble to get jumbled, tortured bueaty like this. Then I pointed it out and he immediately took it down, I guess because he's really sensitive to what he does too(?), it would fit the profile ... and it made it even more fucked-up torturedly intriguing; and now we'll never see it again.

Needless to say, a great portion of "art"
produced since the beginning of the twentieth century full stop fails this test.
I dare say nearly all of it.
People really need to spend more time sifting through endless 13th century icons and pondering their significance to tribesmen of the Papuan highlands. These things were, however, no less admired at the time.

It was like he couldn't stand recognition of his own genius demagogue. But he had it and it's a damned indefinable quality. He made light of it when I pointed out what his paintings said to me. He could not accept that he could be of that calibre. That is a damn shame. I didn't even know if others could recognize it but it was there, I would swear to it. All he had to do was accept it and it would flow. I know it. I hope he isn't just a sot like me. People said some shit about me once upon a time.

What did you do Tocky, to deserve praise or dismissal? Can you show it?

Huh? Check your irony detector, Scots. Also you're developing an unhealthy fixation on me. Trust me, I've seen it before.
