Maybe I'm just overlooking the option, but the forum is set on military time. How do I change this back to 12-hour? Thanks in advance.

Why I bet you think they should make a custom clocktype just for people like you that can't subtract 12 hours from the number that appears on their screen, isn't that right? Well, David's got better things on his plate... he scrapes these sort of queries like dogshit from his boots!
DO YOU THINK I'M FLIRTING WITH YOU, SON?!??!

Far as I know, that's not a thing you can override from the User CP. In the general vBulletin options we have the forums set to display 24-hour time, and I seem to remember that being an actual decision Dave and I made rather than it just being a default we forgot to reset.
Surely it's not that much of a problem, though? Just subtract 12.
I'll keep poking around to see if there's a way to personalise it from the user side, but I don't think there is.

Mmkay. No, it's not a really big problem, it's just a convienence that would be nice. But if you can't find a way to make it user-customizable, that's okay. Thanks for looking into it.

The 24-hour clock is something I've been wanting to switch the forums to for quite some time. The USA and, I believe, Canada are the only 'big' countries that don't use it for pretty much everything.
There is currently no way to customise this at the user level.

Thank you for for switching over to something reasonable. Now if I could just get ISO dates....
TBE on 7/9/2006 at 18:41
I Googled "ISO Date" and found some nice information from (
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/iso-time.html) This Web Page.
Here's a gem for Enchantermon:
Quote:
Please consider the 12h time to be a relic from the dark ages when Roman numerals were used, the number zero had not yet been invented and analog clocks were the only known form of displaying a time. Please avoid using it today, especially in technical applications! Even in the U.S., the widely respected Chicago Manual of Style now recommends using the international standard time notation in publications.
This states the AM/PM thing the U.S. has been using is archaic, which I agree.

How can you say that to a notion which abominates the english language while destroying a country's cultural identity!?

I'm sure the resistance isn't because of any real advantage, objectively speaking ... but there's a reason. It's more like the qwerty effect.
First of all, there's an economic incentive for US digital clockmakers to resist the change, the most obviously affected and I'm sure most vocal parties on the issue. Similar to the reason the US doesn't adopt the metric system and the qwerty system itself, it gives US digital clock-makers a sort of monopoly on the country using the old system and keep foreign made clocks out, so there's some economic interest for them to resist.
And on top of that, you won't get much public movement in favor of it because there's a cost in not only mentally internalizing the new system (it's not that good just to "recognize" how the system works, but to really internalize it so you can spot-check the time, which takes quite a bit of practice integrated over 300 million people), but there's also having to wait for the construction and reinstall of new clocks in every room in the entire country. Apparently, that social cost is felt greater than the perceived benefit of adopting a 24-hr system for day to day use.
Just to say that that wiki page really isn't the best authority on why Americans are so adament in staying in the dark ages. Maybe we need real help from our European bretheren to help break the back of the tyrannical clockmakers holding us back!
