None of you remember the Aliens toys? With "REAL RIPPED APART ACTION" Bishop?

Because the Terminator makes a cool toy and its kids who play with toys.
If you think the only reason Hasbro (or whoever) makes Terminator and Alien action figures is because they think it's a cool toy that kids will enjoy playing with, you're niave (and I know you're not). At least admit that there's a disconnect going on here.

Dude, there are a TON of adult themed things that would make awesome toys including guns, vampires and killer robots. That's life. It sounds a little like you are defending those parents (such as yourself) that take young children to PG13 films and then think "Whoa, didn't expect
ball jokes in here!"
And my boys have all kinds of those toys. But there's a distinct difference when those toys are linked to a movie series that's rated PG-13 or R. For the record, I'm not one of "those" parents - Transformers is the only PG-13 my kid's ever been to (the first one) and I checked it out before I took him so I'd know what to expect. The second one was so riddled with kid-inappropriate stuff that I couldn't be arsed. I've already said it's the parents faults for taking their kids.
So stay on track here - Coming back to my comments on the OP, there seems to be a deliberate attempt by some to target kids with products that are better suited for adults - these movies are examples of that, just like some of these Disney shows that introduce older teen issues to 6-9 year olds. It's the same fucking thing and it makes it tough for parents when their kids are being bombarded by ads for stuff that they're too young for. It's not the same as seeing a beer ad on TV because little kids don't care about beer. They DO think it's cool when robots turn into cars and the ad shows other kids playing with them - it's directed at them, which is very different from normal exposure to profanity, cats humping each other in the yard, etc.
Parents should just say no - but that's not the point I'm trying to make. I'm saying there's something fucked up when 40+ year old men are marketing sexually inappropriate stuff to pre-teens, whether it be the sex stuff in Transformers 2, or Miley Cyrus in hot pants.

They are businesses. Good business is where you find it. Natch.

I agree but you just say no to the kids. It can be hard if they are the only kid without item X but to you want them to fit in or stay innocent.
Anyway, whilst I agree about marketing to inappropriate ages there has to be some point when those 9 year old girls become 13 and I actually think it must be hard for the entertainment companies to target things
just right. Also there are grey areas.

That's probably true to some extent - especially now that the "tween" market is so lucrative. It's just an area I wish they were more sensitive about and I imagine I'd be a lot more freaked out if I had girls too.

I swear I'm going to raise my kids on pre-taped episodes of Ninja Turtles, Teddy Ruxpin and Ghostbusters. and NO MTV/MUCHMUSIC. Not like they play music anyway.

I'm raising my kids on Mythbusters and Mail Call.

I'm raising my kids on Deadwood and Rome and BSG. You're not doing them any favours by shielding them from sexuality until they hit puberty. Explain what it is, explain how to do it safely, and explain that they can't do it until they're older. If you had to go through puberty again, wouldn't you want to know what you know now well before you actually turn into a giant bag of out of control hormones?

In these discussions I keep forgetting that not everywhere has mandatory health and sex-ed from about 11yrs old.
It's certainly much better than not having it, of course, but like a car accident or angry gunfire nothing can quite prepare you for living through the real thing unfortunately.

At what age do you suggest doing this?
