I know we all love spiritual successors around here, and I know there used to be a few Tribes/Tribes 2 players here so I figured I would share the latest in glorious 90's kid pandering: (
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/archetypestudios/midair/description) Midair. It actually looks quite solid already even though it is pre-alpha.
I've backed it at the instant access level, but I only get access the kickstarter is finished in a couple days and so far its 10k over funded (almost about to hit the 1st level of stretch goals).
From what I've seen so far, it looks like the best of Tribes 1 and Tribes 2 put together in a nice modern package. I've been playing some Tribes 2 again lately using (
http://www.tribesnext.com/) tribesnext and I realize that tribes has been badly missing from my life. I hope there will be room for pushing the FPSZ boundaries but it looks like right now they are going for a solid successor before trying a lot of new stuff.
If you've never played tribes, give it a look, it is definitely in a class of its own in terms of competition and challenge but it is a lot of fun. To me, its like playing soccer, I enjoy it and I can always improve but I never get bored because the skill cap is so high there is always something new to learn. I love other FPSs like TF2, but it is frustrating at times because there are plenty of times where your class and weapon choices can make a big difference in an engagement, in tribes (less so ascend), your skill is typically (more of) the decider in fights. There is a big learning curve make no mistake, but to me that makes it all the more satisfying.
If you take a look and like what you see and want to give it a try, feel free to PM me. I can help anyone get set up with tribes 2 as a free warmup to the FPSZ genre and once I get my instant access key I would be happy to show people the ropes who are new to this style of game. Some tribes people have huge egos but I'm long over that nonsense.

Aww man i lost so many nights to Tribes 2! This looks awesome and they're not even housing they influence. The weapons look almost the same, the mechanics and base structs seem to be similar, even the same sloped shafts inside bases.
I'm not a fan of the over saturated colors yho.

Me too, I actually picked it up again recently for a little appitizer and its still really fun (and hard, still not back in the swing but then again I was never l33t despite many many hours spent).
I'm not sure about the colors yet, I do know that I prefer that to overly gritty more realistic graphics that T:V and T:A both moved towards. Playing some T2 again showed me that tribes really does best with more minimalism because of the speed and distances involved, when the screen is busy it can be really distracting. The same goes for the UI strangely, the T2 interface is drastically better than T:V or T:A were which is really odd given it came out so long ago. I still feel like I'm using a fancy modern OS when I fire up T2 with the sound and crisp clean UI, its really odd how well it has aged.
Hit me up if you want to play sometime (T2 or midair once the KS is funded).

Yea T2 was my favorite. T:V really messed up the multiplayer and was a joke BUT I think it actually had a really good single player campaign, I'd recommend it for that alone.
T:A was kinda... weird. It felt exactly as I'd expect an attempt to monetize tribes end. I had some fun with it for sure and they did a good job of recreating the dynamics and physics of skiing and aireal fights, but I found the maps and loudouts underwhelming. I really missed the base building aspect of T2 (which can get surprisingly intricate with sensors, different turret types, mines; I loved when my team would create a little min-base just somewhere behind a hill next to enemy base and mark it on the map).

Yeah, I had tons of fun messing around with bases and stuff. I still remember sneaking into katabatic with a inv pack and we would set up all our spider turrets inside their basement and then blow up their gens. Then we would witch to sensor-jammer packs and be almost invisible and we would wreck anyone that came down to repair. I remember it happening to me on the otherside too sometimes.
I get the feel that midair is "classic" tribes, a lot of outdoor fast moving mobile gameplay and that T2, indoor base stuff will not be as emphasized but we'll see. Siege mode (which I think is planned) could bring a lot of that back, I think the indoor play is not to be forgotten.
They are also going to do Arena, if you ever played that mode. There was some great indoor potential there, indoor arena was extremely challenging and strategic so I hope that they bring that style back.
BTW: The (
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/archetypestudios/midair) kickstarter has 3 hours left and 5k to go for the next stretch goal.

Midair looks like a multiplayer only game.
I know Tribes has always been multiplayer, apart from Vengeance and the training with bots modes. I did play Starsiege Tribes and Tribes 2 a bit back in the day. The spinfusor has to be one of my fave weapons of any game. Ultimately though I've always preferred single player games. I'd love to see a new Tribes single player game with something like some of the large outdoor areas with loads of AI like you get in some Halo games.

Bear - yea I actually liked the CTF mode most because of all the non-shooty stuff you could do. Base maintenance, building sensors, upgrading turrets, vehicles, watching your map and radar, remote bases, beacons.... there really is a lot of depth to T2 (that many didn't really partake in). Even tho I mainly played as stealthy infiltrator, I still loved knowing there is so much more going on than just flying and shooting like in DM, Rabbit or Arena.
My favorite katabatic strat was taking a Shrike all the way around the map (going out of bounds) and parking it behind a hill near the enemy base. Then I'd go invisible and jack their flag, then madly run behind the hill. Next thing the chasing enemy knows, my shrike's flying above and there goes the flag :) Gravcycle worked pretty well for that too.
