I don't think he ever said he was running Vista...
Yes thank you I am in fact not a complete idiot. His main gripe was "Because I'm pissed off when it gets to old hardware that won't be compatible with the new OS..."
That implies he intends to run Vista on a computer that has a high likelihood of using old hardware. To which I ask "why would you be upgrading the OS then?" Especially since both 2K and XP are solid OS's.
I haven't even seen anything that would sell Vista to the average user. All their wiz-bang additions are fairly dev or document content-management centric, neither of which the average user even knows how to do.

Wait... you must be crazy! What kind of problems you have?
I think just about everyone in this thread has a problem. :sly:
But seriously, I was thinking of your average consumer when I said that. Of course businesses wouldn't want or care about DX9 integrated graphics, to keep the price of their purchases down. But I don't think a DX9 chip being standard would add that much to the cost.

A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable. * An SVGA capable GPU running at least 800 x 600.
Err, again, a DX9 graphics chip is required only for Aero Glass. So that shouldn't be part of the "absolute minimum specs" list. Aero Basic can still run on lowly integrated graphics chips. I don't know why Microsoft lists it that way. :confused:

Because they're FUCKING RETARDS.
I have some respect for Microsoft, and I've known plenty of bright talented people who have worked there, but when you have 65,000 employees working on non-physical things (creation of IP), it's just hard to manage the little things.
They should have TTLG focus-test their website and stuff so we can point out all the retarted listing errors and ideas (WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE 360 HAS TWO VERSIONS).
Bomb Bloke on 13/9/2006 at 04:26
There's tons of versions of the original X-Box (most of which are crap), so it wouldn't surprise me if there is more then one build of the 360.
My bet is Vista requires a DX9 compatible card because (wait for it) it runs that by default. Why would they ship it with an out of date version of DX?
If they ship it with DX10, then they still can't put "DX10 compatible" in the specs, because no one knows what's on that list.
Although I suspect that you'd be hard pressed to find a graphics card that doesn't work with DX9. Maybe a few of the ISA ones?

I rarely compile, I prefer dl/ing binaries.
This is where you loose everyone without a pocket-protector.
Linux is an OS for people with a lot of pens.
The end.

To be fair to Microsoft, the DX9 / SVGA card bit is a result of me culling the info from two separate 'capable' lists they have on the site. Separated out, they say this:
Quote Posted by Microsoft
A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:
* A modern processor (at least 800MHz).
* 512 MB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.
Quote Posted by Microsoft
Windows Vista Minimum Supported System Requirements
* Processor = 800 MHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
* System Memory = 512 MB
* GPU = SVGA (800x600)
* Graphics Memory = N/a
* HDD = 20 GB
* HDD Free Space = 15 GB
* Optical Drive = CD-ROM drive

TAnd reduce the prices on the remaining versions. That is, if they really still want people to
pay to use Windows.
Fixed.

Maybe in 4-5 years time when Vista is the dominant OS in the marketplace, you'll start to see vista-only games, but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon.
Software/drivers being written with Win98 compatibility is only just phasing out now. So for an OS to be on top of the market prediction for the next 4-5 years is pretty realistic. By then, the next version of Windows will be well under way and we'll be having the same discussion.

You forget the FLASHY GIZMO value. Not to mention the Ma & Pa users who know fuck all about computers but bought one so they can watch family videos on their whizzbang digital camcorder.
My father-in-law-to-be just bought his first computer, an ancient machine that doesn't meet the minimum specs for XP yet still manages to wheeze and groan its way along. I tried to convince him to take a spare copy of 2000 to solve his problems of his computer barely running his OS at all, but his response was indicative of a fair-sized market segment:
"If I'm not using the latest Windows my computer will get a virus and explode!"

Those in the Bay Area can get a free copy of Ultimate by attending the (
