Renegen on 3/1/2007 at 03:59
Um yeah, maybe you're taking the press and the democracy we have today for granted.

It's hard to argue that something called "Really Simple" is novel and non-obvious.

Frankly, I fail to see how Microsoft could patent a technology that has been around for quite a while, is (AFAIK) not made by them or in any way created by them, is (AFAIK) open-source, and if it isn't almost certainly has a pending patent waiting in line before Microsoft's.
Remember folks, the US Patent Office is quite possibly the most understaffed part of the US government. Stuff takes many years to get patented.
Marecki on 3/1/2007 at 19:06
Well, that's how things have been going with most of their anti-Open Source patent attempts so far... They try, somebody reports foul play / prior art / whatever, they quietly back out. I guess they hope they'll manage to pull a fast one some day and have something important patented before anyone notices.
I've heard (can't recall where, probably from The Register) that plans are made in the US to reform the Patent Office into something more sensible. No idea when this is going to happen with The War on Terrorism and all other important issues on the government's table, but I really hope it comes through.

Besides, most articles are pointing out that MS' application is NOT for RSS iteself, just for an API to manage RSS subscriptions, no?
