First, indie psych-poppers and surprise fashion icons MGMT announce that the follow up to their starmaking disc is to be called
Congratulations and won't feature any singles. No, according to them the album is "a collection of nine individual musical tours de force sequenced to flow with sonic and thematic coherence."
If you say so, lads.
Then they release the cover art which looks like a Looney Tunes still after an (un)fortunate encounter with brown acid:

just look at that shit.
And now they've released "teaser" song (
http://prettymuchamazing.com/mp3/new-mgmt-flash-delirium) "Flash Delerium," which crams an epic and everchanging kaleidoscopic journey through 70's pop, surf rock, doo wop, and punk into four minutes and sixteen seconds. You don't like this part? Stick around, something else is just around the horizon. Seriously, this thing is insane.
I'll be honest, the whole "no singles" stance had me a little concerned given the amount of times I've danced unclothed in public to past MGMT hits like "Time to Pretend," but I'm utterly losing my shit over everything I've seen and heard from this album.
Get your headbands ready, summer is approaching

Yeh I have heard the 'single' and it was a bit of a shock, no catchy synth hooks, very live drum sound, weird flute breakdowns, not as groove-laden. Verdict is still out until I hear more of what they have to offer, I like my hooks blatant and obvious.
That album cover is pretty insane though.

looks like they know how to use ms paint.
Thanks for the link, I haven't heard the new song yet. I'll give it a listen

Back in the day I likened these guys to The Beach Boys mixed with The Rolling Stones on (more) acid going forward in time, but I think I've revised that to be an acid soaked Beach Boys with The Doors. Their original album is still a favourite of mine and while I enjoy the catchy singles, I came to appreciate the non-singles more in some respects. I really love their 60/70s influence and their huge swirly synthy guitarsy digressions.
I like the linked track and love the album art. Eagerly anticipating this one!
I was just today thinking about how I needed some more music since I've listened out the new Vampire Weekend. Did anybody else like that one?
Oooh, new National too.

Good track. Somehow I never listened to their last album despite enjoying Time to Pretend and Kids very much.

Off-topic, but it turns out Pink Floyd sued EMI to ensure that none of their albums were available on a per-track basis and won, as they convinced the judge that each album had to stand as a complete work (and had a clause in their record deal to provide that no singles were required).

This is the same MGMT that did "Electric Feel" ?
If so. Wow that tunes different.

Yep, same MGMT.

And let's not forget the new LCD Soundsystem we have lurking on the horizon. And agreed, that Vampire Weekend is unstoppable.

I realize you're more or less kidding, but this thread is an effort on my part to break musical conversation I care about out of megathreads, where it can get lost or disrupted by drive-by posting. We used to discuss these sorts of things in dedicated threads, and it worked pretty well.
Also: if anything deserves a thread of its own, it's the batshit crazy 4:16 that is "Flash Delerium." I'm impressed that it's as ever-morphing and schizophrenic as it is and yet the whole thing hangs together. It's weird and druggy and gonzo and but also very
listenable. Upon reaching its accelerating finale that practically consumes itself in galloping fury, my first instinct is to pop back to the beginning and give it another spin.
